Worldwide Disaster Day 2021 "Official" Thread

That’s on me. We had one updated T-shirt design that I had intended to develop further based on some feedback, and then life happened. I’ll put some time into it tomorrow and hopefully have the new design up mid-next week!

Awesome work from Team China!

Disaster +1 is…madness. If you want true insanity, have a look at Rockhouse. The Disaster Discord team all reckon it’s harder than Disaster by a long way…

Only -2 (family commitments mean 4+ hrs in the garage was not going to work), but done my bit! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

WOW! You should take on Joey Chestnut.

All right, it’s done. It was not pretty, and the Fireworks section with what would usually be sweet spot + sprints saw me in VO2max territory, gasping for air and holding on for dear life as soon as the first 8 second sprint was done… skipped half the sprints and backpedaled instead. Other than that, managed about as well as could be expected. Longest trainer ride prior to this was 2h15, so plenty of all time records for the Career page.

Now I don’t want to look at my bike for several days.

Also, I watched the Godfather (1972) during all the parts where I was able to focus my eyes on the screen, and it turned out a 3 hour movie was “just right”… credits rolled as I was doing the cooldown spin.

Good luck to all who take this on! I will eat grilled meat and drink beer tonight, believe you me!

Disaster -1 :white_check_mark:

Oof! Did the -1 and had to go through every trick in the book to get through it. Can imagine it being much more doable during race season, not quite the sufferfest 10 weeks into the off season!

My first Disaster done. I did -1. The fireworks at the end make it interesting :grinning:

I used a Fulgaz ride via my CABLE. I find it easier to get through rides like this with something to distract me. I set myself a distance target before I check the interval length again. For the long intervals, I will check in 4km time for example.

Congratulations to all those who have completed Disaster Day.

Did -2, it’s all I had, and had to turn down a few percent occasionally

Well done to everyone

Well done everyone - great to see folks getting through their respective workouts.

I took on the -2 version this afternoon as I felt like it would be achievable without putting me in a hole before a 2hr base run tomorrow. The first hour really lulls one into a false sense of security before getting spicy. Although I never felt out of control, I definitely know that i’ve ridden!

Done, was easy.

Not… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Short summary: brutal all the way (of course), topped off by serious cramping starting with the beginning of fireworks. Had to take five breaks including stretching in fireworks :pensive:

Thanks to all of you for the inspiration and well done everybody. It was my last season highlight (my wife said it must have been a very sad year :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:)

I think I only did it once. So delirious by the end I might have turned around and done it backwards :upside_down_face:

I’ve got a 10-12 hr at the end of January and I’ve really been working on getting the gut used to smashing in the food during these long rides.

All done.

-2 version for my first attempt, so as not to bite off more than I could chew.

Better than I anticipated.

Tough sprints at the end. Wattbike ‘delay’ on high power efforts in ERG mode meant they were over before I’d got into my stride.

Will need to rethink my approach to those in future.

Hardest part felt like the over threshold block in the middle.

I imagine -1 and ‘full’ versions are a different kettle of fish

Well done to everyone who completed one of these workouts today :muscle:t2:

Full Disaster done. The fireworks almost killed me. This was much much harder than when i did the -2 a few weeks ago. It took everything I had to finish, including getting off the bike and walking. Had cramps in both legs front AND back. Couldn’t stand on the pedals without cramping, couldn’t stretch out the quads because the hamstrings would fire and vice versa, so I ended up just walking around for 5 minutes. That was a beast. Good way to end the year. Congratulations to all who took this one on!!

Did -2. Spent an inordinate amount of time deciding how to rate the difficulty afterward, but apparently it broke the app so I never got the chance :joy:

wwdd '21 in the books. Took more breaks than i’d planned, and some backpedaling after the last half of fireworks, but got it done.

Pre-ride nutrition consisted of steel-cut oats, 1/2 banana and coffee. Ride nutrition was 1/2 homemade energy bar, chocolate babka, pretzels and several bottles of lemon-lime skratch.

Watched marathon man and 8-bit Christmas for entertainment. While some of the pain and torture of the former lined up with the 4x10 intervals pretty well, I don’t think i’d recommend this particular choice for this workout. Took a longish break before fireworks and switched to music. abgt got me through the rest.

There’s no way i’m doing this workout again. …at least not until next December. Congrats to all my fellow sufferers. Well done!

Disaster -2 done and it was definitely challenging enough for this time of the year.

The two threshold intervals nearly made me quit, the rest was manageable and I actually liked the fireworks section!

I added some Z2 to get more volume since surprisingly I wasn’t too tired at the end of the planned duration, but I have to say that I nailed the nutrition side of things.

Maybe I’ll give -1 a try at the end of my base period.

Anyway, congrats to everybody who did a Disaster workout today! Also, it helped to know that others were suffering to reach the same goal and it was great to feel part of an event like WWDD.
