Hit a few technical problems right from the get go, trainer resistance wouldn’t increase, then when it did kick in it went to max . Had to reboot everything to get it working properly. All was fine until v02 and trainer went 60 watts over target and stayed there. . Never had an of these problems before so have no clue what happened here, maybe Disaster broke my Quibo. With all the faffing about I had to fast forward last recovery sections as Dad’s taxi was on call.
Followed the Discord for the rest of the day, inspiring stuff. Judging by the comments alot of people hit new pb’s or did a workout they previously thought impossible. Maybe Disaster can make you faster Massive thanks to @zwillis1@mcneese.chad and @bobmac for organising. Until next year
Because my PC blew a CPU I couldn’t DD in the Friday or Weekend.
I was gutted and didn’t get on the trainer until today.
I WILL be doing DD on Friday. Only Day I have free. So for me it will be WWDD +1 week
To everyone that did DD congratulations I am in awe and can’t wait to join you all.
The second sprint I was not paying attention before it started on my smart trainer and was spinning too slowly and came to a grinding halt when it started.
Well done everyone!
Working my way back to regular training but managed -2 this morning without feeling too bad. Plus a donation to World Bicycle Relief, a great charity
After shower and dinner here is my report as well.
Tuesday I did the -2 version to see how it was going… that one was manageable…
Today I did the full version (couldn’t do on Saturday as I was at a tech conference).
Started at 15:45, and ended around 20:35, so about 20 min of rest in total.
I did it in the afternoon as in the morning I had to attend a 3hr class, which kind of screwed up my usual pre-event nutrition: had my usual pre-event breakfast around 8:30, so 7hrs before the start, and topped it up with some carbo-load drink and a bar around 12h… so, definitely started a bit under-fuelled.
But, let’s get into the ride:
warmup was ok, easy… just the 4 sprints had some issue… some started late, and some lasted around 20sec (trainer didn’t ease resistance after 10sec, but only after 20sec)
threshold: I’m a triathlete, so used to those kind of efforts… was not too hard at the end…
endurance: more a mental training than physical
VO2Max: in the first and 2nd I thought: “I’m not finishing this…”. But I guess it was just the big difference in output required. The 3rd was tough as a 2min 105% should be, and the 2nd ramp felt easier than then the 1st
Sprints: wow… those are hard! Did the first, did the 2nd, but then my leg couldn’t take it any more, and had to do some stretching, and rest a bit. About 20min rest and back on the bike. I thought of lowering to 90%, but I decided to give it a try anyway. And eventually I completed it. Problem is that 5 of 10 sprints didn’t raise the power… no idea why. It was not the trainer not responding, but even on TR I could see the target power staying at the same value. Not that I complain much… it saved me 5 sprints But maybe better check out what happened
short final endurance: power was low, so not a big deal… just after 4hrs it started to become a bit boring… so called wife to have some chat in the last 20min of endurance and cooldown, to make the time pass faster
Overall I liked it… would have loved to have some instructions like in many other workouts.
Nutrition:
1 SIS gel 15min before start
then either SIS bars or gels every 30min… in total I had 3 bars (26g carbo each), 6 gels (mixed, both normal, and electrolytes, 22g each) and 1 caffeine shot at the end of the VO2Max intervals, to get the boost during the sprints. So overall, 210g carb = 45g/h
Drink: 2 bottles and half of water + SiS tabs and half of plain water… so, around 2L of liquids. Usually I drink more, but today the fan was pretty cold, and at the end I lost only half kg, so I guess it was the right amount of liquids.
180W avg over 4h15, with 210W NP is really a brutal workout.
TSS of 263… I did IM last year, and my TSS for the bike ride was 274, over 5hr20min…
Almost same effort but today was 1hr shorter.
Glad you finished it. Your write up is totally on point.
We are discussing the addition of some ride notes via comments like yours and others. It would be great to capture some of these points for anyone doing it in the future.
Please fill out the survey if you haven’t done so already. There is a lot of great user feedback in it, feedback like you just provided would be great to capture there. Thanks.
