I rated this workout as Hard, and I think my issue is poor TTE. Coming back from a mountain bike crash and before that my structured work was Power Zone rides on the Peloton. So much shorter. My cadence drops dramatically over the last two reps, but they don’t feel all out or anything. Just my legs don’t want to spin faster. So I rated the ride Hard, not very hard. Workout was Warlow - 5 9 minute over unders. My max HR is 186, threshold from an hour race was 168, preciously was 167 from 95% of a 20 minute effort
How have you determined ftp recently? You said you are coming back from a crash so that will have impacted things.
I would expect some loss is muscular endurance if you have not done ftp work recently.
I did a ramp test on Oct 27th which was 257, which was a little over a month after the crash. Had surgery on Oct 2nd. AI bumped it up a couple of weeks ago. I think my FTP is accurate, HR is about threshold during the over/unders. Interval.icu thinks my TTE is 15 minutes.
Should I rate the workout is very hard because of cadence drop. I could have done another Rep at low cadence, but it would have been very hard to keep cadence at 85.
No need to over-think. I treat RPE estimation as hint for next workout adaptation:
- easy: give me something real or I need to choose my own workout
- moderate: PL += 0.5-1
- hard: PL += 0.2-0.3
- very hard: PL += 0.1
- maximum effort: either repeat or lower
If your goal is to train specifically for high cadence, then it might have been very hard indeed. But if you goal is to put out power, then cadence is irrelevant.
Why do you think the problem is TTE — or that there is a problem at all?
I think it is perfectly fine to focus on finishing an effort without having to do all the extra credit. If your cadence drops, because your body’s self-selected cadence is lower at that moment, then that’s that. Make a mental note, but I’d prioritize finishing the workout.
Out of curiosity, are you using erg mode? If yes, try to use resistance mode next time and see whether your cadence drops.
Just wanting to make sure I fill out the survey correctly, so that the next workout served up is accurate.
Although I agree, it is often a sign something isnt right.
I often see this for people coming down with illness, haven’t recovered between sessions, have an overly optimistic estimate their current fitness.
Most common cause is fatigue or illness. TTE might be a factor, I class that as over estimating ones current fitness
