What are everyone’s go to winter kits? I’m in the Midwest and determined to keep riding outside as weather allows. Been running some Rapha winter stuff and it’s solid but in need of some new stuff.
I use Panache (https://www.panachecyclewear.com) gear almost exclusively, and love it. The thermal bibs might be the best piece of kit I’ve ever owned.
Im wearing Ekoi stuff; its turned pretty mild though here today was a thinner sofshell and bibs and knee warmers. A few weeks ago I had mid winter kit. I might wear bib longs tomorrow though as its a slower ride and will stop for Remembrance Day.
winter kit: bibs, sports bra, hr strap. I dont go outside when its cold. ![]()
Assos has some of the best winter kit. There stuff is pricey and engineered really well to work.
For cold days, the Johdah jacket is great. You can adjust what baseline and midlayer you use based on temps. They are about to release a new version of the jacket, so you can get the prior model at a substantial discount at the moment. Their tights are also excellent but there are a lot of different models so you need to do some research to figure out the differences. Assos gloves are solid too and tend to work well in the prescribed temps.
Other tips would be a good pair on insulation shoes/boots. I use SIDI’s but then still put a warm set of winter shoe covers over them.
Wild card item and a new favourite for this winter, so damn cosy, an ultralight fleece.. there is also a gilet style for layering.
I grew tired of overheating few years ago, so ditched base layers altogether as always seemed to have to take off a jacket remove base layer put jacket back on, just wear a long sleeve jersey, Kalas temps gilet over top. milder conditions just a short sleeved jersey, arm warmers and gilet. Knee warmers and toe covers.
Been eyeing up one of these in club kit Men’s Navy Pro-1 Evo Blizzard Jersey – Nopinz
I’ll just say for me it’s highly variable. Depends on temp, sun/clouds, wind… No matter what, I always get sweaty. Talking 45 F and below, once I start riding, I can’t stop for any length of time, because once I do, I start getting chilled and can’t recover. I keep going working the zip on my jacket (or jacket and vest) to try to keep things reasonably regulated. Back in New England, I’ve ridden mtb below 0F. I’d warm up first to get blood flowing to the extremities, then start and keep going. As long as I kept going, my hands and feet wouldn’t get cold. Once they started getting cold, they’re was no recovery and they would just get colder.
Now that I’m in Texas, I add arm warmers if needed. Mid to upper 80’s this week.
I’ve been living in a new pair of Castelli thermal bibs that I grabbed on a whim. Things are getting too wet/cold so i’ve just ordered some Gorewear long sleeve Jersey, Jacket, Vest and Velotoze shoe covers. Tried a few other covers and was pretty unhappy. These seem to be just what I need.
Gloves, i’d forgotten mine before a group ride ages ago and grabbed a pair from the LBS sponsoring the ride, ended up being the best gloves i’ve ever owned. Cycling Winter Rain Gloves - Nautica Blue • Q36.5
I have this - it’s great ![]()
Not quite perfetto quality but pretty good
I’m thinking of getting a second
Thanks Kev, I think that will fit more like a jersey than a Perfetto ever use it with no base layer ?
Yeah I’ve worn it without a base layer - it’s got a soft roubaix-like lining so more comfortable than a perfetto with no base layer.
It is very warm though
