Wind noise reduction

After trying the Wind-Blox Pro XL devices a few years ago, which I didn’t like, and struggling to get hold of Cat Ear devices here in the UK, I decided to make my own. I made them out out some fluffy material, a bit of Lycra from some worn-out shorts, and some Velcro strips. This photo is the 4th iteration after trying a few different designs.

There’s some more detailed information on my blog here.

They work pretty well at reducing the wind noise, particularly the high frequencies, changing the wind noise from a ‘tearing’ sound to a slightly quieter but more pleasant ‘whooshing’ sound. Actually though, the biggest benefit, which is an indirect effect that I wasn’t expecting, is that reduced wind noise means it never seems like I’m cycling into a headwind.

Great sideburns mate. How do you keep them so dark and luscious?

Ha ha, great aren’t they? I can also use them for costume parties when I dress up as Elvis.
