I think I need to boost my volume if I want a chance to get to Cat 2. No real structure at all
I bet that if you add structure without boosting your volume that you’ll see gains. Also, make sure to look for gains across the power curve, not just in your FTP.
It’s important though, if you do add structure to work your way through the base, build, specialty phase before making a judgement. The different phases will have different effects on your power which may or may not translate to higher 20 minute power. Instead you might get better 3-5 minute power or greater 60 minute power or maybe everything will increase.
I’ve found that I’ve had a pretty stagnant FTP test result for over a year now, but I’ve continued to make gains basically everywhere else on my power curve. These have translated to better race performances for myself.
