That actually does help as >12hrs is definitely the exception for me. Also, the revelation that the battery on the Garmin is serviceable may put them back in the running.
So, now I guess I’m back to waiting for @dcrainmaker to update his comparison. Sounds like he’s super slammed with product releases, but I guess, as long as I don’t need a ROAM2, there’s no immediate rush. If I were slightly more evil, I would buy one from REI and abuse their return policy, but alas.
I picked up a Karoo this past weekend. Drove down to Portland to buy a Chisel and they had a demo unit for 10% off + 10% more for the new bike purchase (and no sales tax in OR) so, on the whole, cheaper than a Roam2 or 840 bought in Seattle.
I set it up like my Bolt to start and have a fondo this weekend where I’ll get to try it out for reals. Initial impression is that the screen is pretty and it was easy to setup, but damn the device is huge after so long with the Bolt. I will suck that up if my aging eyes are actually able to read cues though — the Bolt is basically illegible to my aging eyes.
battery saver primarily means that the screen is off unless you manually activate it, i think its a 3 second timeout. i see it as a get me home with tracking so the ride still happened backup, not really useful for riding as you can’t monitor any of your metrics in real-time. though DCR says the roam at full brightness is about the same
you can also turn the brightness down to 30% and get 20 hours, but then you can’t read the screen in sunlight so again pretty much useless
so as per DCR the 850 really only gets 10 hours battery life (when new) with typical numbers of sensors connected, give or take depending on the light conditions
