4,000ft in 12 miles. Ouch. Beautiful scenery though.
Yeah - it’s a grind of a climb. And that’s with an optional flat part of 2 miles that I added in - I could have skipped and ridden straight up for 4000 in 10 miles. The downhill is fun ![]()
So on Friday finally got out to ride… Needed that after another week of kid being sick and sleeping badly…Weather here is still really inconsistent and it rained a lot during the day I went out at 9pm after the big shower passed and was pretty lucky only had a short section where it rained a lot. And it was warm enough that I never felt cold. Ride three first 3 climbs a voice threshold then tried to best my pr on the short 5m climb segment which I managed by 10 seconds. Last climb was more around threshold. Now tapering until the marmotte.
No photos phone was in a Ziploc bag and was too lazy to get it out.
I joined the social ride today by way of a recovery and whilst they were a friendly bunch they never stopped at a cafe
So after saying our good byes I went to a beer garden and met a random cyclist there and had a proper social.
On the way back one of the local villages had an open day.
Completed the Dragon Gran Fondo today.
My longest ride and the most elevation I’ve done in a single ride.
Lots of fun. ![]()
I had a go at South Twin -1 tonight. I succeeded in making the VO2 max intervals VO2max but only 109-113%, they were supposed to be 120% and my HR was only just hitting 90% according to garmin, although I don’t think I saw higher than 88%. Its been a long day after another sleepless night (dam hayfever and hot nights) after a hard cycling weekend and it was done on an empty stomach. I should have worn long fingers too! In what was a perfect temperature for the rest of me my chemo damaged fingers went numb and sore. I dont think the unusual wind behind me helped with anything either. I didn’t feel able to confidently get out power until I started going into it.
Lol, after I had a go at local but half way up it I got caught by a farmer in land rover (with trailer) and whilst I could have been awkward with the road being narrow, I decided to let off power slightly and started to move to the side slightly. Before I even started that though he started to push through a non existent gap. Obviously not an England fan, as I thought the roads would be empty at the back of 8pm ![]()
So i am a Local Legend now. Not sure how I feel about that (for ref. vej=road and bakken=hill)

It seems like someone created a segment and named it half based on the real name of the road
Did a road/gravel ride with a friend. Started raining in the last 45min but temperature was ok, so nothing to bad. A bit to spicy uphill sometimes but mostly not more the Sweetspot. Last ride before the marmotte, unless I get talked into doing the 30min crit this evening, but will not doing it if roads are wet.
A recovery ride for me tonight and I paced round a local beginners group. My hand was going bit cold and numb though despite it being a lovely 25deg evening so when folk sprinted up the final hill I upped it to slightly over threshold and settled into threshold as I breezed past them and got feeling back into my hand. Its nice to know I’m only 3 secs slower than I was 11 years ago.
Hains Point Hämmerfest
Washington, DC, USA
Almost felt like Tampa, FL with temps in the 70s F and relative humidity near 100%. Changed my warm up laps to include the north end of the point and rode past the Jefferson Memorial.
Another back-to-back workout day:
running late so I had to cut out some bonus lifts. Finished at 5:05, changed into kit, and rolling at 5:19. About 2 minutes down the road my Cat1 buddy called and said he parked at house, so I turned around to get him and we made it to ride start at 5:31. At least 5 people on the ride said I need to adopt him, but I don’t need a 26 year old dependent LOL.
Wind was absolutely raging last night, throwing gusty punches at us. Comfortable 92F / 33C at the start, temps dropped a little but not too much. 1:40:20 elapsed on the bike, so only 11 minutes of waiting at regroups.
Last Wed of the month - ended up having the post-ride social just down the street from my house:
The guy taking pic works at PNW warehouse in Sacramento, he sold two S-Works Tarmacs and bought the full new Red groupset with rainbow cassette. And Enve Melee to go with the Enve 4.5s he bought last year. Somehow he screwed up and got the silver chain. Last week he had the new Hammerhead. These people with their industry discounts, always showing up with bike p0rn. Such a tease.
LBS manager’s bike:
Sic looking rainbow chain and last gen pro 56-43 crank. Dude is so fast he is riding away from local pros and ex-pros on the fast rides. Got back to my house and he realized phone was left at micro-brewery, thankfully it was stuck in the seat crevice and still there.
We all want the new brake shift levers!!!
First TR workout few a few years and it was outside! Beautiful sunny evening, dusty trains and I really enjoyed trying to put out consistent power through the turns.
Today was supposed to be a rest day in my taper but I needed to check my gear, so I did an easy
spin up the Alpe d’Huez
The club TT for me tonight. Typical after a week of still weather a strong swirling wind got up (21mph steady, with 30mph gusts) at least it was still dry and sunny here, elsewhere in the UK I think a storm is blowing in! The net result is I was 7w down on my PB (spending too much energy on staying upright) and 44secs down overall.

You can always use Alpe d’Huez for a spin. Have a nice ride Sunday
I think I will be dead Sunday, the start date changed to Saturday
StrongFirst Plan 015 + sumo deadlifts:
All explosive, a little technique lapse on 1st and 9th swings.
95F / 35C and barely breaking a sweat… heat adaptation is going as planned which is good because next week looks like I moved to Arizona:

Theme song:
That’s hot. Nice that you’re at least getting some breaks overnight though.
