What workout did you do today? (2025)

Glad when the last interval was over, but wasn’t in misery.

Was the 215bpm for real? Was it due to static on the HRM on a cold dry day?

Haha, nah, it’s junk data. The smoothed HR line tells a better story. Quite the opposite, at Brisbane, Australia it’s summer, quite hot & muggy. A flappy jersey, even a wet one, can interfere with a HR sensor, & sometimes they just randomly conk out for a few seconds. :person_shrugging: I don’t remember the exact moment it happened, but I know it wasn’t someone else’s head unit aggressively scanning BT & knocking my TR-HR connection off, because my Lezyne head unit & Garmin watch (both connected via Ant+) picked it up too.

Okay, time to expose my dirty little secret: I flicked my strava & head unit over to imperial distances :scream: because on an audax ride, 124 miles seem less imposing than 200 km. Hopefully ACP doesn’t order all my results be rescinded. :speak_no_evil:

I forget it’s not cold and dark every where.

RLGL has me yellow today after yesterday’s ride, but I felt quite good & wanted to maintain the week’s TSS after cutting a workout short earlier on, so I brought forward tomorrow’s workout, Berkshire. I don’t think it makes much of a difference physiologically whether I do it today or tomorrow but it makes the bars at the top of the calendar look nicer.

It was interesting to notice how I was feeling during the workout. 200w seemed to be a breakpoint. Below that it felt almost recuperative, & above that I felt just a bit worked… not like an “I only have a few minutes of this”, but more like “this is not an all-day pace anymore”. 42 TSS per hour is feeling really good right now.

Boarstone -1 this evening, to round out the third week of my 2nd block of Traditional Base 1 MV. Pretty happy with the intensity distribution considering I wasn’t on the track & instead took it to the slightly more volatile environment of commuter cycle paths & a seaside community whose streets are heavily frequented by cyclists.

Actually it’s kinda HV, but I’ve been swapping a few workouts out for reduced intensity & increased durations. Hit all my planned workouts this week so I’m rewarding myself with a doughey tomoz. :doughnut: :yum:

One more block of TB1 planned, but toying with the idea of an extra after that where I start increasing intensity a little more. Will see how I go with work & starting a new job tomorrow. I’m expecting parcel deliveries to be quite a physically taxing job. Just as well next week is the deload week.

First workout after a recovery week. I actually had one to do yesterday but after a long outdoors ride the day before RLGL adapted it to a Recovery workout and I couldn’t be bothered setting up the trainer for that. Tonight’s was a decreasing SS workout.

Between rest week, being sick the week after, a trip over the weekend, and work, my consistency over the last couple of weeks hasn’t been what i wanted. Had an early morning kiddo activity, too, but then couldn’t sleep, so I knocked out tomorrow’s sweet spot workout and added some Z2. Moved my other missed sweet spot workout to tomorrow, but will still be down a few hours for the week.

Three weeks off the bike due to illness, another 2 weeks building back up to full strength and today I definitely met the man with hammer. Except it was Tracy with the hammer but the joy of completion meant the pain was worth the discomfort.

Still I’m lighter and a few watts higher than this time last year so positives are there too. The club I ride with all look like they have wintered well so come early April will mean the usual spicy finishes to club rides, except sometimes the spiceyness starts early in the ride. Excellent fun though.

Tomorrow is the start of my last week before a rest week and perversely I am looking forward to my Vo2 and threshold intervals. Yes it’s going to hurt but learning to suffer gives me a bit more on the club rides over w/kg.

Today was West Vidette for endurance. Realized I did Wednesday’s VO2 Max workout and Friday’s threshold workout with the chain in front of the little metal thing in between the derailleur pulleys–so it drags over the top of the metal. I waxed the chain on Tuesday and assembled it right before my Wednesday workout. It did sound a little noisier than usual, which I chalked up to stiff freshly waxed links. Whatever. I put my headphones in and go for it. When I started Friday’s workout I heard the same noise. I was suspicious, but chalked it up to the lack of shifting in ERG mode still leaving the chain stiffer than usual. Again, pop the headphones in and ride. Today I heard it again and was suspicious enough to look close enough to see my problem. How do I get credit for the extra watts I was pushing on those days?

You smash your next workout & get to mark it “easy”.

3 x 10 @ threshold plus some Z2 before and after. Legs were a little cooked from lifting yesterday but survived.

Taftan was in my calendar tonight, a mixture of SS, Threshold and VO2max stuff. I did the workout mostly in ERG but for some reason in the first VO2max intervals at a high cadence resistance dropped out and I to toggle to resistance mode until it settled out. Lol in the last VO2max interval I had to toggle to resistance mode again but this time it was to avoid the ‘spiral of death’ :joy:

I did the workout Mount Field in my lunch hour. TR is classing it a low lever SS workout but I think it would be better classed as a Tempo workout, although it does give PL’s in both categories

McGregor -2

Bridged the recoveries on the last set.

Rest week starts Monday, the weather forecast looks good for Sunday so a nice 4 hr z2 should finish off the week nicely. AI will revise my ftp next Friday and I’m hopeful for a decent bump.

Which leaves one training block before the club rides start again. …

5 weeks until first race. First few months with TR, way ahead of last year this time.

Fueled well with three 1-liter bottles, each with 90g of carbs. Had a recovery drink as soon as I got cleaned up, too, which I’m notoriously bad at doing (the recovery drink, that is, not the cleaning up part ). Chilling with my eight year old now. Perfect day!
