Freezing fog all day today, my laptop says it has never got above -3deg C So I hopped on RGT and climbed up Ventoux according to a TrainNow workout Glassy +2. With me being a lazy b this week TN was finally recommending a climbing workout (as opposed to an Endurance one).
Edit: Oh and I chose a climbing one too (a different sort of climb) to keep the freewheel speed/ noise down and for the first time in ages I’'m feeling my upper thighs tight
Yesterday’s workout: 4hrs 34min, 3522 calories, 217 TSS.
Or, as Stalin used to say: “Quantity has a quality all its own.”
For these longer rides I find it’s nice to have a bit of variation in the wattage. My previous go-to 4hr+ workout, Mianzimu, breaks up the entire workout into 15-minute segments, shuffling up and down. This one, Robinson +2, has four 30mm intervals at 75% FTP, broken up by some easier bits. I think I will stick with this one for awhile, progressing the wattage.
The short answer is: do whatever it takes
I started riding a year ago when I got a wattbike. I’m just used to it and find it easier to ride inside than outside. I like the efficiency and not having to worry about cars, etc. For a long ride like this, the night before I try to figure out something I really want to watch, like a movie or show, so that it feels a bit like a treat. I don’t watch TV/movies/etc except when I’m on the bike.
One thing I really enjoyed reading was Nils van der Poel’s “manifesto” on how he trained (mainly on the bike) ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where he won golds and set world records in the speed skating 5000 and 10,000 meter races. He was doing a ridiculous amount of training, like 30+ hrs a week, and he describes the sort of incentives he used to get himself through it all. There is another TR thread about it, but the manifesto itself is really worth a read imo. https://www.howtoskate.se/
Spanish Fork. With TR plans with adaptive training turned on I always feel like VO2 workouts go from easy to hard without any in between. This was the first ‘hard’ VO2 workout for this season’s base training. There was some fatigue from weekend riding to account for but I got through it.
I took some time off with a calf spasm last week and the plan recalculated to a ramp test tonight but it never went away after I didn’t accept it and decided to continue with my previous FTP (which is 6w lower), so I did a copy of next Tuesday’s workout tonight, Abraham. As I was jumping on the trainer I saw a new LA podcast (who I hear you say) and I thought I’d give it a listen. Its a bit full of ads but it sounds like he is finally being a bit more honest.
Edit: Adding an Annotation caused the whole plan to recalculate and the ramp test replaced by a workout. I’ll have to remember that if I come across it again, the last time the ramp was automatically substituted for a workout when I clicke ’ keep current ’
Not going to do a dump from the past few days. Short of it is easy ride Friday; Saturday and Sunday I worked 40 hours, yesterday did 95 min tempo after sleeping 9:30am-3:30pm. Today, I tried this:
This was against my better judgment. First day I haven’t been coughing up my lungs on my bike. Haven’t done a real workout since the day after Thanksgiving. So, this is the first workout I’ve failed since March, though hard to feel that awful about getting in 95 min of sweetspot on my first real workout back. Spinning an extra 45 min of Z2 as I write this.
Probably a tempo effort tomorrow before working the night.
Long outside ride on Sunday meant I was coming in to this workout with a little residual fatigue, but thankfully coming off a recovery week AT is easing me back into things, so the workouts are starting at a modest level
I loaded up a Train Now workout tonight for an Endurance workout suggestion, it suggested Cheeha. I watched the Morocco v France game to pass the time and you can probably see when I lost focus on my cadence and got engrossed in the game. The final time was really annoying as I dropped the remote control for my pedestal fan. I was going to stop and pick it up but I decided two laptops (one for TR, one for the game) blocked it too much anyway
Much easier than expected. Unfortunately had a bluetooth disconnect and was doing 140 watts or so for 30sec.
Progressed to this straight from 3x30min @ 90%.
The trickk is to never look at the time. I had the trainerroad workout screen tabbed away until the bluetooth dropout. Was suprised I was already that far in the workout.
I quite enjoyed that session tonight (in a way that only someone who trains can understand). I stayed in the TT position for the whole workout (Piute+1) and it was only in the last interval that my cadence/W balance fell completely apart.
