What workout did you do today? (2021, part 2)

Nice! The only time I’ve been to Boone I went camping during spring break and it was so cold and so windy that it snapped a tent pole at 2 am. Glad the weather was much better for your ride!

Today is normally a rest day but I plan to cycle with friends on Wednesday night so I moved the rest day to Tuesday and swapped Pettit to tonight. I though I’d turn round before Warmington Hill but I was caught out by an unusually strong east wind and ended up in the village. The hill down and up played havoc with maintaining a steady power :joy:

i hear spring can be nasty here!! hoping to dodge that!! lol

From Sunday. Went well, got some movie watching in. Quads were burning the last 30-45 minutes. After 2 hours I was, again, uncomfortable in the saddle. But a little less so. Only different was using a new brand of chamois. It still hurt at the end but almost no chaffing. Hmmm. Gonna need to experiment with this.

And today’s little gem. Plan was for Baird -1 but I bumped it up a smidge for the progression. Felt good the whole way.

Tomorrow is the last sprint tri of our local summer series. June was 1:18ish, July was just under 1:17ish. No idea how tomorrow will go since I’ve been hiding inside in the A/C and resting my Achillies. :open_mouth:

Pick Guard -2 Threshold 4.2 last night

Too much fatigue in legs? 13k run on Friday evening, supposed to do this workout on Sunday but ended up going out early morning and doing 21km (half marathon) run as well. Took the Monday off but when it came to last set, zwift hills had expired and found it hard mentally to keeping effort going when I was going virtually downhill with legs feeling tired.

Going to have today off, finding it hard to do three TR sessions a week as I now enjoy my running, but have to keep impact on that low so have to be disciplined with myself and do these TR sessions  They are good for me and my fitness!

Good news is that I have two Sweetspot sessions ahead, I enjoy them and find them easy to complete…

Taku was in my calendar today and it also gave me an opportunity to test out a soft bladder I am using for the first time on the weekend’s 30 mile TT.
It seems comfortable and secure enough but I’ll have to figure out my strategy for using it comfortably

Couple more indoor days. VO-2sday and Endurance Wednesday. Computer battery died at end of Cheaha. I did the whole 90 min

I did Wildrose. Hard but mostly do-able. Afterwards I was surprised that AT gave me a +3.9 progression. That seemed way too much. After reading the FAQ though, I now think that’s because I just enabled AT and this was the first anaerobic workout. Does that sound right?

I’ve been doing all my workouts outdoors since the end of March. Today’s was a little interesting for mostly the wrong reasons.

I did Norman Clyde-2 https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/bobw/rides/117137538-norman-clyde-2-tr-outdoor-workout I knew the big ring (Ultegra 6800) was on its way out and was due its second life as a Ninja death star but today was definitely its last outing. Standing up to punch up a short rise the chain skipped and I nearly went over the bars! I spent the rest of the workout mostly in the small chainring.

Went to the local bike mechanic and we had a look for replacements - via official importer the 50T chainring is, wait for it, wait for it, £130 :flushed: That’s $178! Then he looked at the rest of the drivetrain. I ended up needing both chainrings (we found a non-Shimano one for £90), the chain and cassette. Grand total of £191 or $262.

Apart from that the workout went OK, hit the power targets or was within about 3% which is pretty good for outdoors on roads with varying grades. With the chainring in the state it was there was no way I was going to really push it, it was trying to skip even at relatively low power.

Bald Knob was in my calendar tonight and I took it outdoors. I also took the opportunity to test the soft bladder again before Saturday’s TT. I’m not sure about it but it seemed to be comfortable and stable enough but just how much I use it

Steamboat +2 Sweetspot 4.2

The days rest has done good, was doing the Jungle circuits on Zwift and after failing Tuesdays threshold O/U set , I wanted to see if I could comfortably overachieve on this Sweetspot workout.

Had a breather before 30 minutes then on the climb out of jungle I noticed Amelia Anquetil pacebot catching up…so slowed again and then joined the very small grupetto… only reason I could keep up was…I was on the dirt bike…the shallow climb suits power over w/kg. Enjoyed the 5 minutes with them, then I turned left as they continued out of the jungle. Good VO2 blast for me.

Hour enjoyed, marked it down as a hard session, will try and get another in before Monday, planning a long run tonight and at weekend.

Progressions were a bit strange:

SweetSpot 4.5 4.5(± 0)
Tempo 3.1 3.6 (+ 0.5)

Would have expected a slight raise on Sweetspot but I trust AT to be in the ball park. I’m doing less now bike wise so probably for the best.

Fail :man_facepalming:. Not sure if I should bump down my FTP or assume it’s just a bad day. Frustrating.

I put Very Hard but no decrease in my PL.

Took a week off the trainer last week but ran a lot. Yesterday, I got back on TR and did threshold which I normally hate.

But I crushed it and was totally full of myself. So today I figured SS will be easy and totally failed it.

Swapped for Pettit and some humility.

That doesn’t look like a fail to me! That looks like a ridiculously hard ride. And it looks like you completed the really hard part.

Missed workouts over the weekend. Did a TrainNow on the off day Monday. It recommended VO2max but there is a tough Threshold workout scheduled for Tuesday, so… took the endurance option instead just to get some time in without adding fatigue.

Last big week of training leading to race week after the long weekend.

Salado. 3x4min@108%

FTP test

New FTP of 250 from 221. Very happy.

Eichorn +1 Sweetspot (4.5 → 5.0)

Spot the Volcano climb  when you don’t think you have it in you for the final 20 min interval, throw in a mental challenge and surprise yourself…it’s a mental game!

Straight after this I went for a HR Zone 2 run, 11.6km (63min 10km)

Still failing to get 3 TrainerRoad workouts in a week, with the increase in running. Going to try and get running up to 50km a week as I’m currently pushing 40km at the moment and try harder to get the three TRs sessions in.

First threshold workout in a long while. I’ve been dodging tough bike workouts so I could concentrate on my running the past few weeks.

Between a period of not getting credit for outside workouts, and then the run focus, my PLs are all over the place. So I wasn’t sure how I’d get on. This was a down as a stretch workout, but wasn’t too bad at all.

I flopped another failure yesterday:

And did some endurance to remind myself how much I love my bike:

This morning I did a tiny bit of intensity and didn’t let myself quit:

And finished with more endurance:

I’m having a hard time getting through the first 20 minutes of anything hard. Totally agree with this:
