Look at all you fit people with low heart rates. Decoupled heart rate team checking in!
Yes, I was rested, hydrated, and fed for the workout below. All my workouts look like this. Heart rate jumps up as soon as I start working out and it always stays high. It’s always higher than my power zones.
I just started structured training, so hopefully this will work itself out over time. Highest heart rate I’ve ever seen was a few years ago outside on a hot day on a killer climb. Hit 210 that day.
Mills + 30 minutes of “Zone: where are my legs” for me - I’m not sure what I was expecting, but that first set was a real shock to the system, managed to recoup after a stern word to myself. In hindsight, running a half marathon + 40 minutes of SS the day before this workout was far from ideal prep.
Looking forward to the “What workout did you do today? 2021” edition.
Don’t worry about your heart rate, that workout looks great. Your red line doesn’t really go up and to the right over the course of the workout, so you’re already in solid shape! Low heart rate doesn’t necessarily mean “fit”, and “low” is already relative. You can’t compare raw heart rates between individuals, there are too many environmental and personal variables at play.
Also remember all these workout graph screenshots have drastically different values for the Y axis, because “FTP” is always in the middle. You and I probably have very similar heart rate ranges for endurance work, and my FTP is a bit higher so my red line is lower, but I’d guess you’re “fitter” than I am because my decoupling is noticeably higher than yours:
Thanks @ellotheth - that makes sense. I do have a naturally higher heart rate compared to most folks (I assume). My wife never does endurance training and sits at around 45bpm. Last summer after I did a few centuries and trained fairly consistently, my resting heart rate hovered around 65-70bpm.
I’m assuming my heart rate zones look wildly different than my power zones. But I’m just going to focus on power during SSLV and watch my heart rate.
I didn’t feel cooked at all after today’s workout, and sitting at 135bpm for most of the workout felt easy, for whatever that’s worth.
Figure it’s time to return to TR workouts and not just play around outside. So, I did a Ramp Test this afternoon. Not pleased with that, I immediately restarted the test and – surprise! – didn’t do as well as the one immediately prior. I immediately followed that second test with Taku.
Excuse list: This was my first time on the rollers (on the road bike) in about 8 weeks, which was the first time on the rollers in about 8 weeks, which was… and I was really thirsty at the end of the first test
The resulting recommended FTP is much, much lower than what I can comfortably maintain outdoors on the gravel bike. I’ll probably take it for the TR workouts as I get reacquainted with efforts on the rollers.
Thought I’d sub Trojan (6x10) for Jepson (4x8) today as I had the time and figured the 90 minute version would be a good bump. Turns out I bit off more than I could chew and bailed after the 4th (almost like Chad knew what he’s doing Rx-ing the 60 minute version. MAYBE could have gutted out at least one more or finished, but didn’t see a reason to keep diggging that hole, as I could still feels Mills +1 from Tuesday and knowing I had Carpathian Peak +2 coming up. But 4x10 doesn’t suck and I followed it up with 20 min of Z2 work.
Temple. Found this whilst scouring the workout list for something that would serve as a penance for tonight’s indulgence but not wipe me out at the same time… I really enjoyed it. The IF doesn’t tell the full story - that’s a solid block of work in the middle - but I really like the extended 60% at the end, the relief comes on as a slow release rather than the instant hit you get on a normal 40% recovery valley. Anyway, nice to end 2020 getting off the trainer with a smile on my face rather than crawling off the thing… best wishes all.
Lamarck. Finishing up SSB2 MV. Felt good and was able to do higher watts on resistance for last two intervals.
Planning on doing a 20 min FTP test late in the rest week and then the ramp test the following Tuesday. Will compare Lamarck, 20 min and ramp to see how much variance there is for my “FTP”.
Last couple of days at lunch. Not feeling that great, took last week off to do some work on the home but the rest didn’t do me any good. Post-viral fatigue seems to be returning.
Carillon +2 today. Can’t link HR to the old iPhone I use for TR, but it never got above 85% MHR, which shows how comfortable this was. Great way to sign off 2021.
Yesterday was rough. Brasstown felt hard so I paused twice to eat chews … during Brasstown. Seriously. How could Brasstown feel so hard? Didn’t feel up to the drills until the sugar kicked in. And this was Brasstown.
Grateful for all these great workouts… even when I dig myself into a hole… and so very grateful for the supportive, knowledgeable and fun community on this thread.
