Pettit around Zwift UCI Yorkshire
I enjoyed the leg spin

last night I kicked off 3rd week of traditional base, and already seeing some results. On Thursday last week did Virginia (125 minutes w/extra cooldown) - and sadly aerobic decoupling was a lousy 17%. Then on Saturday the same workout cut short to 40 minutes, and for the first time since starting base1 my breathing was steady and it felt great. Last night was Gibbs, another 125 minutes of aerobic endurance and this time my aerobic decoupling was under 5% so right on track with aerobic development
Into week 5 of SSB2 LV, so Spencer+2 was on deck. Man, these were really really trying. I’m much more of a diesel than a VO2 machine, so these longer big efforts are outside my comfort zone, but I got through them.
So with the end of SSB coming up soon, I’ve been thinking about where to go next. I was planning on an event in late October with my club, but real life seems to have derailed that. Looking forward, I’d really like to ride the Horsey Hundred in late May of next year. I’m planning on starting Sustained Build Low Volume in a couple weeks, followed by SSB1+2 High Volume from late November through mid-January, followed by Sustained Power Build HV, and finally Climbing Road Race specialty mid volume to take me right up to the event. I’ll need to trim the last week from CRR to make it fit, but I think that should put me in a good place.
I’m a but wary of the high volume plans, but I’ve been pushing high TSS weeks for the last few months and know I can handle that kind of work…averaging 787 over the last 11 weeks, ranging from 681-973 each week. Any insight from those who have done HV plans in the past?
Carillion +1. Man, I find the SSB workouts brutal. Long stretches close to FTP - really tests my endurance. I know it’s a great bunch of workouts, but I have to play some motivating music to keep it going at the end.
3 hrs of Endurance riding as a part of my Phase 2 Polarized Plan
Been off the bike for 5 days due to travel. This is a case of my pulse starting out too high and coming down over the course of the ride. Reverse decoupling?
First of all, if you’re going from LV to HV, that’s a big jump.
100 TSS from a 3hr ride is not the same as 100TSS from a 1hr ride. The efforts are different and thus the recovery is different. You cannot base your decision on TSS alone. HV plans require you have a good base, sufficient time to train, and especially adequate time (sleep) for recovery. Otherwise, you will be circling the drain before long.
Goddard doing Zwift in Yorkshire. I spend many childhood summers in Yorkshire, enjoyed looking at the scenery.
Really loving the outside workouts, it’s a shame winter is coming. Done 7-8 of them now and love it.
I do miss the encouraging words from coach Chad tho.
Celebrated my wedding anniversary yesterday and the evening meal was not ‘cycling’ fuel. Neither was the red wine.
Nice and steady endurance this morning
Ebbets today , felt tired and nearly didn’t go on the trainer but glad i did. I feel more energized now !!
Thanks for the thoughts! I’m aware that not all TSS is created equally. I’ve been cycling for 6ish years now in quite large volume and believe I have the base required, as well as time to train and recover. The explanation for the jump from low to high volume is that come November, it’s likely that outdoor riding (usually 10-12 hours worth per week) will cease/dwindle to opportunistic base rides on the weekends. I can always drop the plans down to mid-volume if I’m finding otherwise after the first couple weeks.
Gros Morne, where does Chad get these names from?
Nice session, really enjoyed the every increasing intensity then the sprint sections. I have a feeling that traditional base will be my friend, especially after the difficult short power build I completed recently
First over-under workout with new FTP. It was not that bad actually felt fantastic.
I have done first 3 interval with Powermatch and the rest directly with Neo2.
Neo2 definetly felt way more easier.
Pierce -1 this morning.
It has been a while since I’ve done a session like this and I found it pretty tough. Those 15 second breaks between sprints were just enough to keep me going.
Gah this just felt so good, I am loving recovery week. I’ve ended up with a week of gap between the end of this Century Specialty plan on Sunday and my big ride, so I wasn’t sure if I should repeat Week 7 (last week) to line it up properly, or do the whole thing as scheduled. So far I’m glad I didn’t repeat the week. I’d swapped from Low Volume to Mid-Volume at the half-way point, and based on how I was feeling, I think four weeks of load plus the extra volume would have just left me tired for the sportive.
On the other hand, not sure what I should be doing next week now!
I did Piute this morning before work & it just emptied me! Not sure if it’s because I took my last bike workout outside but this just felt like it was going on forever & took a lot of will power to keep the pedals turning.
Roll on race day, 17 days & counting.
Separated my shoulder five days ago so this is the highest intensity I can really get through one-handed:
