Bragging purposes only. I never have and probably never will do a 1hr TT. I like to know what my sustainable power is, but i pretty much know by feel rather than needing an objective test. For example, a 10min all out gives me a good idea about what i can do for 20-30min.
Its nice to say im X w/kg tho
I’ve used it to make my workouts more productive, versus HR and/or RPE.
And to easily compare workouts across seasons/fitness-levels, or track progress across seasons.
And sometimes look back at previous efforts, easiest example is a long HC climb, and for upcoming event(s) use that info on relative (% ftp) performance to help set power/pacing/training targets.
Nobody talks about FTP on coffee rides or group rides, we discuss actual performance on Strava segments. And then heckle the sandbaggers that always suck wheels, never take a pull, and then sprint for Strava glory at the end.
FTP carries no vanity or bragging rights, thats why we have races and podiums and Strava segments and post-ride/race beers.
My wife doesn’t want to have more relations with me if it goes up or down. And to be clear, by “it” I mean ftp. LOL. If only.
Same. I pretty much only use it to pace things between a 2 hour race/TT (so SS-ish) and a 15-20min TT.
It’s still mostly by feel but if I look down during a 2 hour race/TT and I’m doing 110% then I’d better have a good reason for it or I should back off a bit.
Same for the 20min TT. If I look down and I’ve let off the gas a bit and I’m doing 95% FTP or the opposite and I’m doing 120% then I adjust and move back toward my target.
It’s a reference point to scale Trainerroad workouts. Nothing more, nothing less.
I use them to send flowers. And know what power I can hold for 50-55mins
So insecure…
I don’t use ftp, I use hyper trainer threshold power systems to know how to do my training
I use ftp to brag about how much I beat aiftp numbers. Otherwise it’s just used so tr can set the resistance
Very much
Very much exact ditto.
