that was my first thought too. Sigh.
Per DC Rainmakers video, RGT needed to sell themselves to stay around, so the time that Wahoo owned them was essentially bonus time. Wahoo said that in winding this down, 0-4 people will either find something else to work on or lose their jobs. It’s not clear if those people are the original RGT people or other people Wahoo put on the project.
So I still think it was a net benefit for RGT users that Wahoo bought it. Per informal checks by Ray, RGT active user base is roughly 1% of Zwift’s.
Well sure. In a sort of sense of it allowed them to use RGT for an additional 18 months. But that’s a pretty tiny benefit. It’s just disappointing that another platform is gone. Competition is a good thing. And nobody has really been able to compete successfully with Zwift.
If MyWhoosh, which is free and has seemingly gobs of money behind it, can’t grab a nice user base away from Zwift long term… will anyone really be able to? We shall see.
Not to mention the fact that MW is giving out real $$$ for competitions on a regular basis. I have no idea what real incentives will be needed to cut into Z’s hold, but MW sure seems to be trying rather hard.
I am half tempted to give Indievelo a shot, but my typical laziness to make changes is holding me back
My minimum requirement for a platform is the ability to pull in workouts from TrainingPeaks. IndieVelo can not currently do that. Have to shove 'em into a directory.
MyWhoosh wouldn’t work for me in that regard previously, but I tried it earlier today out of curiosity and works fine now so that’s nice.
While I’ve some sympathy with that view, founders have a simple way to retain control of their creations, and that is to never relinquish control to 3rd parties…
If relinquishing control becomes necessary because the economics don’t stack up, then they shouldn’t be too surprised or disappointed when the economics still don’t stack up for the new owners.
I write this as an ex-software bod whose best stuff often ended up never even seeing the light of day (as in release/production)! The RGT guys can console themselves with having created some good stuff, got it acquired by someone, and hopefully made some bank. Success (of sorts)!
Sure, and I get that from a purely logical standpoint. But as someone who’s had family members put in a ton of work to make something a success only to see it pissed away by those that followed in their footsteps, there’s an emotional side to this as well as the financial/practical one.
Not saying that anyone should dwell on it. But taking a moment to reflect and accept the loss is a legit deal to consider.
This is one of the reasons I implored Nate to “never” offload onto someone else. A lot of soul goes into these creations by the founders, and money only buys you so much. Don’t let the creations you really care about go too readily, else you risk mourning them forever once you lose control and someone else trashes them.
I’ve not used it yet but I downloaded my whoosh a few night’s back I get the impression from reading reviews that it is very resource intensive and won’t run on a lot of machines.
I hope you’ve started it, because it needed to download another 13GB when I opened it earlier.
Guess the writing was on the wall the amount of bundling of Zwift Wahoo is offering with trainer sales currently.
I’m loving MyWoosh for what it’s worth.
@killroy123 Having done just the one ride, the immediate thing I have to say is that I really like the design choices for the on screen display of information.
Wahoo’s take over wasn’t that great for the existing user base, myself included. I didn’t see why I need to fork over more for stuff I don’t use.
I’m waiting for turn of the nose responses on MyWhoosh because of the owner’s nationality. It’s been very slow and silent recently.
Doesn’t seem to be available on my apple TV, which I specifically got for Zwift during 1st lockdown. I tried RGT then too, but found it a bit of a faff compared to zwift to be honest. But I’m very much in the camp of preferring GCN+ as moving wallpaper than an avatar when I’m doing a workout.
That’s a shame about apple TV! I done it the other way round tried Zwift first, it set up easy but I found the ‘game’ too much of a faff (I really don’t want to be pushing too many buttons in a workout with my fingers (especially back then when they were completely numb after Chemo) so I tried RGT and until the steering stuff I liked it more (more realisticect). But with the steering stuff you had to either buy a wahoo steering kit (which I’ve not got room for in a small flat) or press buttons (the reason I dropped Zwift). I kept my RGT subscription going but didn’t use it for a while and when I went back to RGT, it now hogged the Ant+ dongle it had previously shared with TR. I needed a 2nd dongle and to start it up in a certain order (I cant remember if it was RGT then TR or visa versa and leave the 2nd dongle out until the 2nd program was running), faff indeed! During all that I found my self preferring GCN+ too or a podcast so I cancelled RGT (I really should have done that after the steering debacle).
I haven’t subscribed to zwift for a while - I never used steering/ controls. Zero interest in that to be honest - I was half thinking of re-subscribing for the winter for when the weather is too bad for outside, and I have decided I really couldn’t be bothered!
I always wonder how platforms like fulgaz and Rouvy still manage to hang on.
Certainly many people comment about not liking the Zwift graphics but I have to believe the vast majority of people don’t care that much about it since at the end of the day you’re still staring at a computer screen and it’s not a super immersive feel to any of the virtual cycling platforms. So it’s clearly just the number of people, races, group rides/workouts.
I don’t know how MyWhoosh can pull people away from Zwift. Being free for awhile is essential. Beyond that they need to market the heck out of it and somehow get enough people on the platform so it’s not a ghost town.
I mean…it really is Sportswashing. You don’t want to know how Dubai was built.
