Mine is set to heart rate, and it comes on as soon as it detects my HRM sending a signal. If you had it connected to a smart switch, it would probably power on, but as it uses either the fan speed control or your HR/Wheel Speed sensors I think you’d still be adjusting it.
I love mine, I also bought it at a discount, and I have a nice Lasko air mover as well, but since I have AC in the garage/cave via a mini split, I don’t use the Lasko anymore for this. As I said, mine is tied to HR, so as soon as I turn on the rig for a workout and snap my HRM on, it wakes up, and starts blowing slowly, picking up speed as my HR goes up. You just set your min/max speeds in the app and forget it. I have mine set to blow maximum at 160 BPM, since when I get there, Im working pretty hard. I think the default to blow max is whatever your max HR is set to in the Wahoo App, so I’d have to be crushing it to get there.
Thanks for the reply - sounds like I can just hack this to work the way I want it to - basically in the worst case I can just set it to HR and then set the max fan speed to a really low HR so it’s basically on all the time.
Well in case someone comes back and looks at this thread - no the headwind does not do well when attached to a smart switch. It loses all memory of the mode it’s in when it is unplugged.
HR is the most useful setting and for that to stay set, the headwind has to be plugged into power for it to remembering automatically turn on when your HRM is detected.
New Headwind owner here - can anyone tell me if they’ve been able to successfully control the device with a Whoop Strap 3.0? I figured it would work since it broadcasts BLE and works fine with my Wahoo Elemnt, TrainerRoad on my Android phone, and Zwift on my Macbook. When I go through the steps to pair it using the device button procedure it never works.
the headwind connects over ant+ to your HRM not BLE.
I just had mine arrive today, paired to a Polar OH1, but it dropped out about 4 times in an hour ride which is very disappointing! Does anyone else use the same HR strap, or have suggestions now to stop the dropouts??
Yes. I normally just leave it on, but each timeit has been switched off at the plug when it’s been plugged in again it still remembers the last connected HR sensor and starts up in the same mode (HR).
Out of curiosity, what’s the point in turning if off each time anyway?
Good to hear, Wahoo have agreed to replace it. I switch everything off to save electricity in the garage where all my kit is, the Headwind and trainer are on an extension so wouldn’t want to leave them on.
This is one of these ‘I know it’s a bit of an extravagance but I really quite want one’ type of purchases. Would all you owners say you’ve not regretted the outlay?
100% yes, before getting it I couldn’t understand how much they could charge for a fan but it’s genuinely excellent and worth every penny if you train indoors more than a couple of times a week.
