Wahoo Headwind - Owner thoughts

Do you leave it powered on? I turn the electric switch off in the garage after use and that shuts down the Kickr and the headwind.

Yea, it’s just plugged in in my office. No good breaker to hit to turn everything off.

Basically it sleeps when idle and wakes up when it detects the HR. If you turn it off (or it loses power), it stays off. They could’ve made it auto-power on but it’s a minor thing.

I like mine and find it useful even w/the rollers instead of the kickr. My really minor feature request would be a ā€˜start slow’ option for cold spaces – otherwise its a big aggressive at pushing cold air at you before you’re completely warmed up.

My heart rate also runs higher than most (age 49, max 197) but you set the ranges of your heart rate, and then set the levels that it comes on (mine is set to 80% max hear rate = full power) as it’s a percentage of the range, it doesn’t mater what that range is … works pretty well for me

I don’t use it in speed mode, as well hear rate works fine

Wouldn’t just adjusting your hear rate ranges, and setting where it comes on \ off have the same affect, mine doesn’t come on till heart rate = 120, and full power at 80% … I don’t have the problem you describle as the warm up just sets it to ā€˜slow mode’

Funny, this exact same speed controller is widely used by people to rig up variable speed blowers on wood fired maple syrup boillers… I have one in my sugarhouse! Will try it with my new lasko fan coming this week. The control box could easily be hung off bike or stand in front of bike for very simple remote and fully variable control, no apps or wiring needed - just plug box to wall, and fan to box. Still, the app you made looks awesome and you should try to put it out for sale!

It’s really bizzare but since I’ve been using rhe Headwind (BT linked to my Tickr HRM) I’m running at about 10W stronger and have nudged my FTP setting up accordingly. Would be great if it was Apple Homekit compatible so I could voice control it, however, for most rides HR control is fine. For lower intensity rides when my HR stays pretty low I switch to manual control from the App.

You can adjust the floor setting if low isn’t high enough.

That is what I thought as well when I read the post from @AdamGlass.
Just set the intensity quite low until your HR rises by which time you will have warmed up.

How happy are you guys with your purchase thus far? Would you get another one or something else? Where I live the Lasko, which everyone seems to love, is not available and since I just got a Saris H3 for a sweet deal, I’m looking at the pricey wahoo headwind. Those generic three-blade-fans seem to be hit or miss for our intended purpose. Would really appreciate your opinions on what to get.

Have you searched for other brand ā€œblowerā€ or ā€œfloor drierā€ fans? There are different brands that offer very similar fans.

I could get a dewalt DXAM2250 or a stanley st700dre. don’t know how they compare to a lasko or headwind unit in both noise and airflow. any insights on what to look at would be very helpful.

I’d start by comparing the flow ratings. I’m US based, so the Cubic Feet per Minute flow is the rating we see. Check if that or a similar rating is posted for any fans. That is a clue to the speed of the fan.

couldn’t find any info on the wahoo headwind and noise level (except for the one I can’t get anyway)

I bought the Headwind a year ago during my Clevertraining.com 20 percent off one item sale. I set up my heart rate zones on it and sync my Fenix 5s to it and haven’t looked back since. It works great every ride, produces a ton of cooling, and the auto-adjustment by heart rate is a super convenient feature the just make life a little simpler. It’s a little pricey but for something I use multiple times every week I feel it was money well spent.

Order the headwind and just waiting for mine to get home. Bought it after reading some nice reviews and owners opinions. All tend to say the same… Very good doing his job (cooling) but to darn expensive for a fan. For me isn’t just a fan it’s a tecnologic fan, that heart rate control of the fan is really useful, and that only for me is worth the extra cost.
A question here. Are carbon wheels over 2.000€ more worthy of our money than this necessary article for cooling our indoor trainings at 250€?

You’re right, I’m cheap. But I also sweat a lot so I don’t know if I’d ever turn down that fan. It comes down to how much one values convenience.

For the headwind - does anyone know if you plug it into a smart switch - that it’ll turn on when you turn the switch on? Or do you always have to start up the wahoo from the remote app?

I have my entire setup driven off smart switches and just want to give one voice command to launch my entire setup. Thanks!

I love mine, only con probably is the upfront cost. On the other hand, it has been reliable for a year of daily use. I am a VERY heavy sweater and pretty much have it at ~25% for warmups, 50-75% for easy-moderate workouts, and 100% for hard workouts. I’ve never felt like it was insufficient for cooling. I feel like otherwise I’d be one of those people that would need multiple fans to get the same cooling effect, so it feels like an investment well spent (just like my Kickr!). Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your reply. In the meantime I got one myself and am very happy with it. Setting the Fan Speed according to heartrate is a handy feature I wouldn’t want to miss anymore.
