+1 for totally worth it!
Replacement seems to be working, remembers it’s in hr mode when powered off, pressed power button once after replugging in and it found my hr and started working! 30 mins into a workout so far and no drop outs
I bought a headwind a few weeks ago but returned it after a couple of rides. I loved the remote control capability. I don’t have an issue with the price but two things bugged me.
- The vents are fixed which limits placement.
- More importantly, and the main reason why I returned it, it didn’t move much air compared to my lasko fan. I didn’t have a good way to objectively measure it, but it felt like at max speed it was putting out slightly less air than my lasko at 2.
I returned it and bought a second lasko u15617. I work out in my non-climate controlled garage (although it is insulated). I think the headwind would be more than enough in a climate controlled space. If they came out with a version that matched the u15617 output, I’d buy it without hesitation.
I really love it. The best thing is not to have to worry about it to connect because it automatically detects every single time my hr and increases power with it.
However, do you notice whenever in low fan mode that it makes an audible buzz noise? At higher fan power, I don’t notice it but at low fan speed, I found that buzz a bit annoying. Can you notice that buzz?
Noise gadget that is very expensive, so I changed it with profi ventilator…
Yep a Litlle buzz when in very low mode but its only audível if the music os not cranking up and generally it is and also low mode usually is only on the first couple of minutes in too the warm up.
He, he, I agree, it only happens at the beginning, once we start it’s not audible. I just wanted to confirm that it was normal. Thanks!!
It’s noisy on a hard floor - had to pad mine. Think the loose cheap plastic axle / wheels in back are both unnecessary and cause most of the noise,. It’s light - why does it need wheels? Otherwise I like it but think it’s overpriced.
Wes
- Wahoo designed it to mount on their training desk, that rolls forward and backward. So, the fan has wheels to also allow this F-B motion. It has nothing to do with the weight or size of the fan.
OK I guess that makes sense. I actually briefly had the desk also but thought it was also way overpriced and useless to me so I sold it. Got a sturdy iPad stand instead that I can set a bit off to the side and have an unobstructed view of the TV. It’s very close to and above my right shifter so much easier to reach for tapping in commands than when I used the desk. I have the Yahoo fan furthest away and the Lasko right in front of it on a remote switch. With the Lasko set on 2 and the Wahoo fan on HR zones it’s all the air I need. The fans also work well for my treadmill and kayak ergometer.
Resurrecting this rather than starting a new thread…
Does anyone know if it’s possible to pair two Headwinds to the same trainer? Obviously I could use a second in manual mode, but having two linked to HR would be ideal, otherwise I’d go for a cheaper secondary fan.
Yes, you can: I have two Headwinds paired to Garmin HRM-Pro and previously to Wahoo Tickr X
Awesome, thanks for the quick response I’ve been wondering forever.
Has anyone other than @TexasCrane ended up replacing or supplementing the headwind with another fan to get more airflow?
I’ve been super happy with mine, which I think is 4 years old this month, but I got it in a bundle with my very first trainer so I have nothing to compare it to. And for the third year in a row I’ve just started struggling with Jan/Feb threshold sessions indoors. It’s power numbers I can do outdoors this time of year, but indoors I start to see max heart rate, profuse sweating, and end up failing workouts that I think should be achievable. It’s not particularly hot in the room where I train (20c/68f) but this is the time of year my heating is on the most, so I suspect it’s probably a bit warmer than in other seasons. It’s also cold enough that if I open the window a bit I’ll sometimes find the air makes my chest tighten.
So I’m wondering if the solution is to pick up a Vacmaster (UK’s Lasko equivalent) and use it alongside the headwind. Is that bit of extra air movement likely to make the difference for me? (Or at least likely enough to be worth spending £100 to find out?)
Where do you have your Headwind placed & aimed?
Do you have any cooling on your back? This is an often overlooked option, and when done well with proper front fan placement, can make a HUGE difference in cooling. Our back is a massive heat sink and prime for airflow to improve evap. cooling.
I purchased two Headwind fans around 2 years ago now. Over time, as I dialed in my training needs in regards to cooling I have added 2 Lasko fans. I have a Wahoo desk immediately in front of the bike, and due to this I offset the Headwinds to either side in order to get good directional airflow. I then added one Lasko to the front that blows under the desk on my legs, and one in the rear that blows on my lower back. This combination along with opening the window and letting in the outside cold air achieves the necessary cooling for harder workouts.
Hmm. Got nothing on my back just now. Headwind is approx 3ft/90cm from grill to front hub, so airflow focused on torso and upper legs.
Time to put a second unit behind?

That would be my suggestion. All the people I have told to try it come back saying it makes a big difference.

Set it up around hip height and reasonably close to your saddle. This keeps the airflow more direct and less likely to wash wide and disturb the front air. I have 2 front and 1 rear. Mainly use the top-center front and rear, while adding in the front-side fan when it’s overly hard workout or warm in the basement.
donlee, if you turn power off to the fan and then turn power back on the fan will not go back into “stand-by” mode. It will remain off until you push the power button on the fan, then it will go into “stand-by mode” and turn on/off based upon your setting of HR or Speed.
Did anyone ever determine CFM for this fan?
This review comment indicates Wahoo was supposed to get back with a number.
