Vo2max block with sweetspot?

I tend to prefer picking individual training phases, instead of using plan builder.
I am about to complete a base phase cycle, and was going through the various build and specialty phases.

Any thoughts on having a block with two weekly vo2max sessions and one sweetspot session? I can’t seem to find a build or specialty phase with this structure (it’s either no sweetspot, or some threshold instead of the second vo2max).

Why have the SST in a focused vo2 block? It’s going to add some fatigue and if you are doing a vo2 focused block I would personally just do vo2 work for a couple weeks then recover.

I agree with @Twowkg. Wouldn’t you rather extract all the adaptations from VO2 work instead of blunting it with fatigue from SS? I know mixing VO2 and Threshold is common in a build, but these seem to complement each other and typically it’s one of each a week. I don’t see the benefit except maybe it’s just more enjoyable.

I’d say give it a try. I’m a proponent of 2 hard sessions a week and it sounds like you are getting those with a couple vo2max days. Some people can handle a 3rd hard day. Personally, I’d never do 3 vo2max sessions per week because it would burn me out, but trying a 3rd day with sweet spot could help build aerobic fitness without creating too much stress. Probably better from a training perspective then going out and doing a hard group ride. It’s all individual, so hard to know without trying. Try it for a couple weeks and see what happens. If you stay fresh for your vo2max work, than I’d call it a success.

I should’ve added some context. I was thinking of the low volume short power build phase, or the low volume base III.
Depending on the week, you’ll see even two vo2max and an anaerobic workout, or two vo2max and a threshold. But never two vo2max and a sweetspot. Which I found peculiar.

two VO₂max sessions and a sweetspot each week should give you a nice balance of power and endurance. If you can’t find a preset plan, just grab any two VO₂max workouts and a sweetspot workout from the library and slot them in.
