Virtual Aero Bars Banned, Give Me a Break!

Oh indeed, I’d definitely have a pair if not for the price and were available in 40cm.

Current UCI reg (i.e prior to 1st April 2021):

Article 1.3.008 of the UCI Regulations states: “The rider shall normally assume a sitting position on the bicycle. This position requires that the only points of support are the following: the feet on the pedals, the hands on the handlebars and the seat on the saddle.”

Seems like that would rule out the Speeco bars in the article posted above by @mcneese.chad.

Yea, it’s not the fact that you can’t touch your brakes, it’s that you aren’t supporting your weight with your hands. The Speeco’s don’t change that. You are resting you elbows on the handle bars still.

No, the Speeco bars allow you to hold the bars with your hands. Your hands are supported on the bars (i.e. they aren’t hangin off the front, puppy-paws style).

On my flat top bars, I can grasp the hoods, get my forearms horizontal and have my wrists on the bar…but no one is going to say my bars are illegal.

And IIRC, Speeco said their bars are UCI-legal.

And £1500! So only World Tour teams with mental breakaway specialist will be able to afford them, so in total we’ll only see Thomas de Ghent and Marc Hercshi on them.

Plus me after I rummage down the back of the sofa for pennies.

Some more “new breakaway position” bars, not quite as mental but still different looking:

I bet UCI won’t let Speeco bars pass.

You’re right. I amend: I bet UCI won’t let people use the Speeco bars as they are designed to be used.

I am very interested to see if UCI starts outlawing the wrists on bars with hands on hoods position. Especially with hoods turned inwards. as is becoming common. (My wife and I both do this.) Inconsequential for me because I’ll never race UCI. Not inconsequential for my wife though!

Speeco has already said their bars are UCI legal…haven’t seen confirmation (or denial) by the UCI yet though.

Zero chance that happens, IMO.

Before 2021 I’d have said there would never be so much as a conversation re: VAB. Perhaps my cynicism has the best of me!

You’ll have to ban Roubaix?

This looks like the rider pulled a big old middlefinger on the UCI and the UCI middlefingered back

Don’t think I want this narrow but it’s another breakaway bar: New UCI regs? Challenge accepted! Dan Bigham's 27 cm road handlebars - CyclingTips

jeez. They must be übersketchy on a descent. Also can´t imagine they are particularly comfortable for an entire race.

You should be descending in the drops anyways. Going from 42cm to 38cm was fine for me. Would be more than willing to try and go even narrower.

Oh wow, these might be the next thing to be banned:

For a pro? Ok.

Can’t wait to see Cat 3s try to dive under each other or sprint from the hoods on super-narrow flared bars…

Can’t imagine those would be any good for out of the saddle climbing, either.

Great for one very specialized application, rubbish for everything else.

These are 27 cm that flare out to 32 cm on e drops

Did anyone end up buying the Speeco breakaway cockpit yet?

I’m close to pulling to trigger as my main goal for the next season is to do tts on the roadbike.

I don’t care about compromising my sprint or climbing tbh. Are they any other downsides i’m overlooking?
