Video Games - Recommendations

I started gaming in the early 90s and played consistently for about a decade. I’m now mid-40s, and a couple years ago I loved Breath of the Wild. It’s the only video game I’ve enjoyed as adult with kids/job/etc. I bought MS Flight Sim, and occasionally fly around, but that’s mostly exploring the world.

Picked up a Switch 2 and am blown away how well Cyberpunk 2077 run on it. I had bounced off it in the past, but now about 40 hours in playing of a combo of Switch 2 (portable mode) and PS5 Pro using cross save. Likely will move on to Star Wars Outlaws after this one which offers similar cross save feature set.

However this weekend Borderlands 4 launches on PC, Xbox, and PS5, and then later on Switch 2. No cross save at launch but reported to be coming. While I won’t be playing it while on the trainer, it will be occupying a good bit of time between rides. I’m thinking it should help with recovery..

Zwift!

I now tried this too. Setup:

  • Steam Deck with Joy Cons
  • Trainer in ERG (low-middle Zone 2)
  • Mini-Desk in front of the trainer to hold the steam deck. It’s a bit above the front tire to have it as close as possible and on the low side to reduce neck strain.
  • Handle bars as high as possible to reduce weight on hands

I tried a FPS (where lots of small pauses are possible) and it worked quite well actually. Three hours went by like nothing! I’m a bit addicted, I don’t even like to game without the stimulation of riding anymore.

The next day my upper back was sore and I had a bit of neck strain. The back soreness is probably because most of my body weight was hold by my feet and rear end, so my core needed to work more. Neck soreness was because the display was too high up (fixed).

Things I didn’t like: Constant position swapping with the hands. No position feels stable and comfortable for long. It’s hard to grip the controllers, somehow the handlebars and also still be able to use the back buttons of the controller. Best was a small pillow on the handle bars simulating “puppy position” (arms on handlebar with pillow).

I will try round-based games in the future. And I will try out clip-on aero bars, to have a more stable position with my hands/arms.

In general I totally fell in love with the idea, at least for the moment. Gaming kind of bores me after half an hour and so does riding indoor, this seems like the perfect solution.
