Unbound Gravel 2024, Jonathan?

DJ shows 10th for me on the results page. The instagram stream cut off before his group arrived, but it looks like it was bunch sprint with six riders. The person in 7th was one second ahead of the two folks in 8th/9th, then three folks one second later for 10th/11th/12th. I’m sure backward hat Dylan will be giving DJ a ton of crap for not finding the measly two seconds needed to jump up to 7th.

The women’s race is shaping up to be a banger of a finish!

How did everyone go.

I missed a podium, I let 2 guys roll away with 5 miles to go. Kinda pissed but at mile 90 my knee started to hurt. Mile 130 it was grit my teeth pain. I would have bagged it if my daughter wasn’t here, finished in top 40

Wasn’t there a rule change on this though? Could swear I saw a reel of a guy saying you’d be DQ’d for messing with the standard position of the thing.

I rolled the dice today and went out stupidly hard for the first 2+ hours. Blew up in spectacular fashion about 7 hours in, but recovered enough to hold on for 3rd in age group. I’m on cloud 9 other than still feeling like I’m gonna puke.

I went big on training volume this year and ftp wasn’t any higher, but that volume just creates another kind of fitness. First 2+ hours today was .91 IF (285 watts) and then another 9.5 hours of racing.

I was with the lead group at Alma, but couldn’t find my pit crew and got out way later then everyone else

Congrats guys. How was the route? Pros seemed to eat it up.

It was pristine. I pre rode most of it after heavy rains about a month ago and I can’t even believe it’s the same roads. They did a bunch of grading in the last month, all the ruts and washed out stuff was gone

Congrats! What type of volume over the last 3 and 6 months?

Lack of heat and wind made it fast

Best possible outcome for me today. Spent the first 100 miles freaking out about every ache and pain, loosened up the 2nd half and let it flow. Extremely difficult mentally but literally 0 mechanical or physical issues besides a very sore ass. 13 hours and change coming in very undercooked, very happy.

Latched on and traded off pulls with a huge (not fat) guy the last 10+ miles in the flats. Dude could throw down power lmao. If you’re the big guy in purple thank you!

Pushed ctl up to 130, working up to 1000+ tss weeks pushing near 20 hours. Also did a “overload” camp about a month out from unbound. Then actually did a proper taper despite my concerns about losing fitness.

My Ctl never went over 80

100m single speed. No mechanicals (a first here) and great weather (another first). Course was fast and smooth for Unbound standards. Only one water crossing and one spot that was too rough for me to risk riding it. Maintained self-control for the first 30m (another first here). Ate and drank like it was my job. Had a blast battling with a fellow SSer for the final 60m, who beat me in the end. Sputtered out in the final 15-20miles. Finished 5th.

My ctl maxes out at 80-85, but I started doing endurance training late in life. And I was never genetically gifted. So all threshold and short glycotic, all the the time, “worked” but not like doing more low-intensity volume. Everyone is wired differently.

Didn’t quite beat the sun, but I would have if we’d started at 6:00. Great day. Course was excellent. Finished at twilight with no mechanicals, crashes, or serious problems. It did get a bit hot for this Seattleite.

While sitting in the finishing area, drinking my free beer, I asked who won? Lochlan. That news made me nearly as happy as finishing. I drank the last sip, and walked away. And there, not 10 feet away was Lochlan! I said a brief congratulations and was on my way. He seems like a truly class act.

Thanks. IF of .707 is 50 TSS/hour, so I see your average intensity is about where I expected.

Congrats again, and what a payoff for all the hard work! :clinking_glasses::beers:

I’ll post more later, but pretty happy overall….finished in 13:08 and 14th in my AG.

Felt great through the second water station, but then ran into an issue with my nutrition……the powder in my bladder never mixed well after the first aid station (no pre-filled bladders were allowed) and at first I was just getting mostly water but then I was getting very high-concentrate Flow Formulas. Around mile 120, my gut shut down and I spent ~2 hours with no calories and just sipping some water.

Buddy dragged me to the second aid station where a Coke revived me….redeemed myself in the last 50 miles when my buddy and I were reeling people left and right. But then he popped with ~30 to go and I got to return the favor and we got to the line together.

We both DNF’d in 2019, so finishing this thing off together was rewarding!!

Huge props to Lachlan today….so awesome to see him bag a major win!!!
