What are people planning on carrying for on-bike repair stuff for the 200?
Well I am out. My injury has kept me off the bike past 4 weeks, I see the doctor next week.
Enjoy it everyone, hoping I can defer to next year

Has the smart drink worked well for you? I havenāt really tested it out. Iāll have 40g carbs in my bottles then aim for a couple of gels or skratch chews to get me to in the 80-100g carbs per hour range. Waist hydration pack will have water but may add some nuun tabs to that
Itās like freaking magic. First time I used both Eat and drink in combo was a self-supported century during lock down. I was rolling home at 107 miles and felt like I had another 20 in my legs because I was hydrated and fueled.
Eat doesnāt work as well for me now since it prompts for calories and Iām trying to stuff in 90-120g of carbs in. I try to start with solid and work my way from there to block, gel, liquid, but depending on the ride/race and where I am, there are times when the only option is to grab for the bottle of carbs and take a swig, but I donāt start with liquid. It really is my last resort, bottom of the barrel, final leg, I donāt want to eat anymore but I need fuel, option, because I KNOW I can drink something as innocuous as Maurten or roctane drink.
Actually 50/50 Maurten & Roctane Summit Tea has all the carbs and just enough of a different taste that I can use it even when Iām tapped out. Iām going to try and do a DIY mix using some instant black tea or jasmine tea I found on the interwebs. WAY cheaper than either of the off the shelf, but I better get crackin because there really isnāt a lot of time left to experiment & validate a ānewā DIY mix as April starts next week.
In the past Iāve tried on carbs in a bottle but at times it felt like I was just forcing myself to drink when I didnāt want to especially in cool weather. Hence switching to fewer liquid carbs and use gels in solids to fill in the rest. Gives me a little more wiggle room if I drink enough. But if itās warm at unbound like most years drinking wonāt be an issue.
I have these also, as Iāve read that they are among the best plugs for sealing a tire quickly.
I have had poor results with bacon strips, and the Stanās dart was completely worthless (couldnāt penetrate through the hole in the tire; the plastic spindle broke; the black fluffy things ripped off).
One concern about the Dynaplugs is if you need to put a tube in after the plug, youāll need to first extract the plug as otherwise it will puncture the tube. So the Dynaplugs better be good at plugging the tire!
I havenāt tried stanās dart, but I like the dynaplugs. I carry bacon strips also, but only used for longer cut where a dynaplug canāt fill the entire hole. Sometimes takes multiple strips to make it work (at which point itās sometimes faster to boot/tube it.
Iāve actually had great experiences with the Stanās Dart, but I also carry bacon strips and a dynaplug.
Iām sitting here trying to decide if I bring a whole ass spare tire with me on the XL, seems like itās a fairly common thing for folks to do
I had a spare at each drop bag, but I only did the 200. I do carry the parks tool sidewall patches with me incase of a major blow out, and hope I can make to the next drop zone. The XL is a whole other beast of a ride so I donāt know if that is practical.
We have been debating this as well. On the one hand it seems like overkill given the experience so far in the 200 (KNOCK ON WOOD), but it would also suck to DNF because of a tire failure. In some ways itās not that different from the 200 where very few (if any) people carry extra tires.
Have you ever been on a bike ride where you needed to replace a tire? I never have. Iāve replaced tires after a ride, but was always able to fix things during the ride with plugs/tube.
Thereās a saying used in backpacking/mountaineering - āyou pack your fearsā. If I was riding the XL, I wouldnāt bring a tire.
Taylor Lideen whoās won the XL brings a spare and also runs Maxxis Rambelerās with silk shield. I think he used his spare in one of his wins.
47mm pathfinder pros mounted. Measure 46mm wide right after mounting.
6mm clearance at the rear chainstays. Clearance at front fork not an issue.
Iām going to ride later today on them. I expect them to feel nice and plush!
Rode the Gravel Course for this yearās Sea Otter on the highly discounted IRC Bokken Double Cross 42mm yesterday. Good gravel tire, but not a great Fort Ord tire. Needs more side lug for the highly packed but can be loosened sandy terrain.
Howād you like them/ what tire pressure did ya run? I have yet to set mine up as I want to keep āem as new as possible before the flint hills, but Iāll probably install them at the end of the month
Ran them on a set of Head GC3 Performance wheels at 26 up front and 29 out back. Only felt too soft on some larger XC type hits. Felt stiffer than GK SK+ 43mm
Iāll probably take them off and put last yearās SK+ on for training.
Im set on running SS+ on HED Emporia Pro wheels for race day.
Started at 30 psi. Higher than Iāll run them, but I had just put them on earlier in the day. Will drop a few psi and see how they feel in subsequent rides. Even at this pressure, the tire felt more plush than my previous 38s. Definitely will be running these for unbound.
