I’m planning on attending the UCI MTB races (XCO & DH) at La Thuile-Valle D’Aosta next July. Any pointers or suggestions for a successful spectating experience appreciated. I don’t have any reference point for what the crowds & typical logistics are for these events.
I was at Val di Sole for the DH 2 years ago and it was beautiful chaos.
If possible take the tram/lift to the top and walk (hike) down the dh course.
Bring ear plugs because there will be someone on your left with a chainsaw, someone on your right banging an aluminum rod on an aluminum rim, and everyone will be yelling while ringing cow bells. Don’t forget your own noise maker.
Arrive early so you can catch all the morning races or warmups, explore the course, and wander the pits.
The junior and U23 are fun to watch too so don’t skip those.
The days before and during, many pros are on the roads or trails nearby getting some rides in and most are quite friendly so say hello.
I was in Les Gets a couple of years ago for World Champs. You can see surprisingly little on race day with the crowds but the atmosphere is great. I found the practice days much more interesting, watching riders puzzle over line choice and less people to obstruct your views. You can also wander around the pits and a lot of the riders are quite happy to say hello, whereas on race day they are stressed and rushing around.
