TrainNow suggested "Breakthrough" workout ?!?

And it went fine.

That AI shit seems to work.

Not gonna lie, that looks rough!:hot_face::hot_face:

Yeah I’ve done a hard pass when it goes past productive. On thing a real coach can do is tell you why you’re going to nail it. TR just drops it on the calendar with no rhyme or reason.

I had my doubts but it seemed to work out.

Well, didn’t feel great, but short of “all out.”

You’ve never done a workout past productive? Depending how you’re progressing, stretch workouts should be pretty manageable, particularly closer to the next AIFTP update, assuming a good training block.

Didn’t say that. What I’ve taken issue with is having say a 2.6 Threshold on the calendar for a couple of weeks then fire up TR only to see it dropped a 4.0 in its place after a weekend that had two long Z2 rides. Then a week later after ignoring that adaptation, have it swap out a 4.0 that I was sure I could do, with a 2.0 despite training load being low. The algorithm has changed more than I care to adhear to.

Nice work @BrooksW! :flexed_biceps:

@webdev511, we’d really recommend giving the workouts that are prescribed to you a shot.

Try to focus less on the Workout Level and just go for it. Workout Levels can be a bit deceiving, and as we continue to improve things, you might see workouts that, based on the level, might seem out of place, but we’re actually confident that they are a good choice for you.

If AI sez breakthrough, u do breakthrough.

Well it happened again. Me happily sitting at 2.8 Threshold assigned a 4.5. So I attempted it and got about halfway through the first set before pulling the plug because it was TOO DAMN HARD. no way, NONE that I was doing three sets. Bailed, tried to find a train now, but train now was down, so queued up a productive 30 min Threshold that was hard, but I completed.

Yeah I think the algorithm is not right. Not for me anyway. Giving me serious thoughts about just bailing on TR altogether.

The workouts are no longer almost too hard. They’re either flat out too hard, or just too damn easy. It’s almost like the 4 years of workout history is gone and it’s just guessing incorrectly across the board.

super frustrating this close to Unbound.

Not saying it’ll definitely help, and frankly it shouldn’t matter…

But if you’re feeling like threshold workouts at 2.8 are challenging and 4.5 are impossible you likely have am inaccurate FTP setting

The AI should be well able to handle this situation, and even could be responsible for it if it is the TR generated FTP, but you’d be removing one confounding factor to lower your ftp to a place where threshold workouts in the 4s feel possible

And yet when SS, Tempo, even VO2 are assigned, they don’t seem to be a problem. are they hard to very hard? Yep. but not bail in the middle of the first set hard.
TR has all the workout data, it sets the FTP, it sets and adapts the training plan.

I was completing Thresh/VO2 consistently before my last AI FTP update 246->250 then it all fell to crap. So much so that I’m just not going to set a plan after Unbound. Take a couple months off of planned, structured training, and just ride bikes until August. Keep the ride consistency, but drop the calendar. This is supposed to be fun. Consistently being assigned impossible workouts is not fun.

A 2% change shouldn’t really materially change what you’re capable of completing. If you’re saying you can do twenty minutes at 246 but have to bail halfway into that interval at 250 there’s a bigger problem

Has your recovery or overall (life stress included) stress changed dramatically in the same time frame?

One thing to look at would be your heart rate as well. For example if your FTP is too high, a tempo workout would be a sweetspot workout, and a SS a threshold. The threshold would now be impossible to complete.

I have had an FTP that was too high in the software after alot of unsctructured riding outside. I could barely finish SS workouts (PL 7-8ish), and i finally gave in and did an FTP test, went down 20 watts and training felt fine again and now i have grown past that previously unsustainable FTP. But the clue was in the heartrate for me, the SS workout was performed at threshold heartrate zones.

I had a similar thing happen. I had a couple weeks off the bike, then did a VO2 max workout at PL 4.4 that I did and marked hard. Later that week, I had a slight FTP update. By Tuesday, TR had adapted my VO2 max workout to one that had PL 6.5. It was 2 minute intervals at 125% with 2 minutes of rest. I adapted that to Fishers (PL 6.1 same thing but 4 minutes rest). I was very dubious because I haven’t done longer VO2 max intervals in ages and have consistently struggled above 120%, but I decided to give it my best.

I got halfway and started crumbling. I did one more at reduced intensity and bailed. The plan did adjust my subsequent VO2 max workout back to a 4.8, but weirdly, it also keeps decreasing my threshold PLs and seems to arbitrarily change the endurance ride PLs.

I’m trying to play along for a few weeks to get more insight before filing feedback, but it has been a very strange ride lately.
