There would have been loads of people complaining that TR was losing it’s way, and anger when TR either reduced the number of updates to the existing TR, or increased the prices to pay for the development of indieVelo
Quick update here: had a pop-up when I logged into the TP app this morning talking about the IndieVelo acquisition and mentioning that it’s included free with a TP Premium subscription. So, this just seems like a pretty straightforward Good Thing™ for now. TrainingPeaks needed a workout player, and now they’ve got one that’s also a Zwift competitor.
There is a decent number on there.
Over 40000 accounts, of course that doesnt tell you how many regular users but its a decent amount. There were significantly more riding this morning than yesterday, and more chat (so not bots.)
Just checked it says 5100+ riding. Last week the most I saw was 3000
I thought something was up when the Monday update was all about scaling and future proofing.
- 40,000 (you missed a zero)
Good catch.
5603 currently riding, not sure if and how many bots.
There are pace maker bots, 5 - 6 I think, cant remember, but they are fun group rides at different wattage ranges.
Personally I don’t mind bots. I don’t typically talk to people on virtual cycling apps. And with indievelo I know with race bots they’re supposed to behave more like regular riders and not just motor along at one set pace range.
I’m curious if coaches who use TP to manage athletes will start funneling them to TP Virtual and create team group workouts/rides/races for their athletes.
I used Fascat plans for a bit a couple years ago even back then they had private group Zwift rides avaialbe to their users. Steering TP based clients to Virtual for such purposes seems like a natural progression.
For those unfamilar with group rides on Zwift, Zwift has the ability to do group workouts and “rubberband” group rides so riders of varing ablities can ride together. and you can make both private/invitation only. I’ve never delved inot IndieVelo but I’d be surprised if it doesn’t have the same (or it will very soon . . ) Even a coach who only had a small number of clients could easily do regular group workouts or rides to create a virtual group/team feel which would be a great selling point for any coach.
I figured IndieVelo was unlikely to get off the ground post-beta because there are too many alternatives. Pairing it with an app many (most?) coaches are already using seems like a great plan. I just hope the dev team is going with it so it continues to improve.
Yeah, TrainingPeaks has a pretty huge user base, and funneling people straight to their app might actually be able to put a dent on Zwift’s numbers. After a quick google, it doesn’t look like TrainingPeaks publishes their user numbers anywhere, but it does say they have more than 3000 coaches on the platform. I’d guess TrainingPeaks has over 100k athlete users at the very minimum? Maybe considerably more? Difficult to say.
But if they can funnel a significant percentage of them over to IV, that could put a sizable dent in Zwift. Or at least present enough of a threat for them to make some meaningful improvements at a quicker pace. I’ve been on Zwift a long time, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.
I may have to give it a shot…but I probably gotta get to Level 100 first. I can’t waste my time riding on another app when I could be logging XP. ![]()
Yeah, my thinking exactly. I’m just on the cusp of 86 now, so my OCD completion won’t let me seriously consider anything else until that’s out of the way.
Yup…I’m just about to flip to 91. I really need to get into some of the ToW events, but the weather has been great here this month so I have still been outside.
Interesting thought, will Virtual implement a tool for coaches to “ride” along with clients and coach them in real time through a workout via text and Discord? The coach could charge extra for that service. Given what Zwift alreardy does with “rubberbanding” and its group workouts, that kind already exists. But with the merger of TP and IV, it gets fully integrated into the coach/rider interface.
I think theres a space for them to make it a race centric app. George being the guru for anti online cheating would be a great start. That wouldnt take much to get going. They also have track which Zwift does not. People could still level their hearts out on Zwift and race on indievelo. That would buy them time to make new worlds and add features to the platform. Just my 2 cents ![]()
He is (yes, it’s just one guy!)
Hopefully he’ll have some help/more resources so things can come out even faster, although the pace of updates has been crazy recently anyway.
indieVelo already had a “DS mode” that coaches could use to watch and message teams. The wiki.indieVelo.com page has a lot of background for those unfamiliar with the platform.

Just downloaded the app, going to play with this. Is there a TR team or other suggested team I should join? Can you join multiple teams like in Zwift? I noticed there is no AppleTV app yet, so will have to try this on my PC.
Two variables for the equation: The number of free TP’s users, and people riding indieVelo only because it’s free.
I myself don’t find a value for the money on TP. Intervals offers the same, if not better analysis for free. I woundt pay for a TP subscription to use indiVelo. I’d rather pay TR.
