TrainerRoad - what do users expect / want in the future

Nice. So we go from 2 5-week blocks of work with a week recovery to 3 3-week blocks of work with a week of recovery.

I just finished the old sweet spot base low volume 1 last week, now I’m wondering if I should do general base 2 then 3, or just continue on to ssblv2 this week

Also the training plans in “general build” have shifted to more hard/easy in structure. Low volume days off, high volume with endurance rides.

Good shout. I hadn’t dug in yet and see that HV is REALLY different now in particular. Seems to step away from the SS-centric focus of the past for more of the intensity + Endurance side… interesting.

Yeah, looks like most of the plans have more z2. Even build plans have longer z2 on the weekend. In fact, it seems most plans are sticking to 3 key workouts and add z2 for volume

Now I am happy to see plan builder created plan, don’t feel the need to tweak it on my own (if anything, maybe ability to choose 2:30 per day, not limited to 2:00)

General base‼️ thanks for the heads up!
Plans have endurance on the weekend :open_mouth:

It can really be anyone, but the general guidelines we have are 50+, or anyone with poor recovery, such as new parents, shift workers, athletes with high-stress jobs, or athletes with sleep issues.

There’s going to be a lot of athletes in the 30-50 range that could benefit from being on masters plans.

Master plans are out?
ETA - looks like a nice toggle on all the plans to easily see the “regular” and masters plans.

Here is a sample of the high level delta with the “Master” switch Off (top) / On (bottom).
I also swapped the order of the Thu & Sat workouts as I normally do:

The difference is swapping the Hard Sat workout for Endurance.

Next step adds “Masters” at the lead of all phases:

And jumping into the header for a phase allows selection / swapping between Masters and regular versions, apparently:

And after reviewing the main plan, I gotta say it looks solid overall. I do wish I had the option to set longer workouts on Sunday than the apparent max of 2 hours. I get it for indoor since most people won’t ride a trainer longer.

But even if if I swap to Outside, it keeps the 2 hour limit. I expect people would like the option to use longer workouts in these cases (at least I know I want them). I will just use Alternates for longer duration since that appears to work from a quick test. So perhaps the 2 hour limit makes sense and hits the widest range of users.

Very solid update to the plans.

Reckon that “Masters Plans” could become the default plans for many people, as a template of 2 scheduled intensity workouts per week, providing more “recovery budget”, should be popular:

  • the lower baseline of scheduled intensity makes it easier to respond to how you’re feeling, optionally adding more intensity if feeling fresh
  • less of a feeling of being ruled by your plan, so better able to enjoy social rides, ie. go faster if fresh, without risking derailing the plan
  • whilst still retaining sufficient scheduled plan structure to drive progression.

Having both Polarized and Masters now offering “2 scheduled intensity w/o per week”, there’s good choice now for those who like this approach.

The 2 hour max seems totally arbitrary and unneeded. If fact, I feel this gets in the way of long endurance rides on the weekend that are now being prescribed and in the triathlon plans.

If the “extended time and not intensity” feature needs some guardrails, they should be baked into AT behind the scenes and not limited upfront.

@Nate_Pearson, I hope this idea (just adding the buttons for +1min and +5min to every interval in a workout) is easy to implement. After @Bbt67 suggested it three weeks ago, it keeps coming back to me as something that would be INCREDIBLY useful.

If I’m feeling particularly good during the last sweet-spot interval, I can add a minute to it.

If I have a Z2 interval at the end of my workout (which I didn’t before, but I do now!), I can extend it easily.

I don’t think I’ve ever extended a cooldown… this is a much better use for those buttons.

Deciding right before the cooldown whether I want to tack on some endurance time or not, would be a real benefit to most people who don’t make their own workouts. But for ALL of us, having the ability to easily tack on another minute or few to any interval in the workout would be amazingly valuable.

And thanks for all the stuff just released! Needed the Master’s plans, but I really appreciate TrainerRoad’s commitment to continue improving and listening to its users.

We’re updating this so we can have longer options on the endurance days. It was just an oversight.

@Nate_Pearson AI FTP is just awesome, and unlike anything else out there. Any plans to look at other parts of the power/duration curve?

TrainerDay has had this feature and it’s awesome. They do a “+10sec” button and I’ve used it so many times. It’s such a useful button to have, whether you want to extend the interval or recovery. Super helpful.

Two other features that TrainerDay have that I think TR should add are:

  • “skip block”. Zwift has this as well as TrainerDay. Basically just skips forward to the end of whatever block you’re doing. I like TrainerDay’s implementation slightly better as they give you 3 seconds of the current block. So say you’re in a recovery and want to get back to work, you hit the button and it counts down 3 seconds to start the next block. Really cool.

  • merge workouts. This is something I feel like TR should have added years ago. Basically, this allows you to start another workout without having to end your current one. And keeps the entire workout as a single file. So say you’re doing sweet spot intervals and want to add an endurance workout after. You pull up the new workout and it begins at the next block. Or maybe you’re doing an endurance workout but after 15 minutes or so, you feel really good and want to do a SweetSpot or threshold workout. You don’t have to end that workout and start a new one, you just merge the SweetSpot workout to the existing one and get after it. Single workout, single upload to Strava.

Yeap, that is why I use TD and made the suggestion. Customise the plus 10s button in your presonal settings, perfect solution.

This is a soft one from me, but I quite like seeing how much time is left for the whole workout. But having come from being a zwifter for 2 years, these following things helped a bit.

  1. I know it shows the time when the session will finish, but its also quite motivationally nice to see that i only have 20 minutes of the workout left.
  2. While in a TR workout would it be possible to scroll my mouse over the next few intervals to see what power they are set at. Or maybe even have a number attached to each bar.
  3. Is it possible to push TR runs to garmin yet, that would be cool. I know athletica, and Mottiv apps do it.

Thanks
