I’m eager to see this update ! Will there be any news on the Triathlon training side of things ? Specifically on running analysis, recommandations and workouts ?
Question,
How will the platform update impact TrainNow! say, if used daily?
How much data does it need to know if you are a Jonathan or a Nate? Or is it still a bit of a black box to you as well?
Interested in this as well.
Is it just that @Nate_Pearson is “Off the couch” right now and @Jonathan is much more well trained? Or, is it more than that?
Sort of related, I’m also interested to see how the new AI works with higher volume plans / events. I’ve got 3 years of data on a Leadville plan now working with a coach where I’ve proved I can do the volume yet every time I plug in a TR plan it wants to cut back the volume and says I’m overdoing it, which I’m not on board with being the best choice when training for events like that. In fact - some of my best and most impactful workouts have been on red days.
(TR Subscriber, but currently doing a plan with a coach, but can see myself moving back to TR / Self Coached in the future.)
I’m reading a lot in Nate’s replies about the model using HR data. I don’t use HR indoors (Zwift through Apple TV and ran out of BT connections), I’m assuming (hoping) the model is smart enough to still work accurately without HR data?
@Nate_Pearson , does the AI account for gender/age on this FTP projection and if so, where is it drawing that knowledge base from? Older females are cognizant of the relatively meager data out there for their group. I know its getting better but they’ve been largely ignored as a athletic sub group until very very recently so its hard to be confident the AI is gathering an abundance of data in an area that has been under represented on certain fronts.
Lol - I remember those xx min Abs references. Now we’re down to 5 min after all these years! Who can break 4 min or less?
Assuming you are using a power meter?
I read it the other way round. Power meter is and always be king. But if you only have HR for outdoor rides it can still help get you in the right zones. But your much better with a power meter. This isn’t new news. It’s always been the case.
Thats not how I’ve read his comments the last few days. He’s clearly said they’re using power AND HR data. I know that’s a change, but it is what he’s been saying, and they’ve been telling us to wear an HRM because they’ll use the data in the future for at least a year now.
The power meter is to measure the work you’re doing. The HR is to measure the effect that work is having on your body/system. They are both valuable over time when you analyze many of your rides against each other. I think that is what TR is trying to do if I understood that correctly.
Heart rate data will help improve workout recommendations, but power data is the primary source for recommendations. If you have the option tracking your HR is ideal. If not, that’s ok.
So excited for this update! Honestly, Adaptive Training has been working pretty darn well for me recently (350 to 369 FTP since mid September), so the possibility of even more improvement is exciting. Might actually get me using a heart rate monitor again.
Big thanks to @Nate_Pearson for taking so much time to answer all the questions.
@Nate_Pearson hopefully you’re still in a responding spree or maybe someone else on the TR team could provide input - Does the current system (or will you in the future) have visibility and react to altitude? Assuming you always live and train at the same elevation it would be irrelevant but with the new AI model looking really hard at all of our performances, could that be a surprise to it?
For example - if I live at 6,000 but plan a trip down to sea level and have a handful of hard workouts or races, my numbers will very likely be considerably higher than I would have been capable of at home. If the model takes these into account without the context of going to sea level I would think that wouldn’t be helpful for its understanding of my current abilities. It really wouldn’t be all that different than if I trained for 2 weeks with a power meter that was knocked out of calibration.
Probably less problematic but a similar use case for the model considering elevation would be how it interprets someone racing at an altitude significantly higher than their base. The HR/Power relationship would obviously be different for those efforts but might still represent a breakthrough, but at face value it might not look all that impressive.
I imagine this would be a very complicated thing to include but as it’s been discussed a lot on the podcast over the years, I would imagine it’s something you guys might have thought about.
Power pedals on the eMTB inbound ![]()
A definitive answer
I was using the power readings from a Levo for the short period I had an e bike, do they not all broadcast the power?
I’m on an old gen one Shimano Steps system that doesnt broadcast it. I bought a stages XT crank a couple of years ago (Still got it @JoPage) hoping it would fit but the pod fouled on the motor. Up until now HR has done a reasonable job however I’m riding the eMTB more and more on endurance days to get a good ride in without the fatigue so a pair of Assiomas that I can also use on the gravel bike seem like a reasonable shout.
Sorry for the super tangent when you are focused on the current release, but this seems awesome. And if you get to the point of generating individual workouts, I would love it if the user could tailor it. For example, I get on the bike at 5:00am and my 52 year old body is not yet awake. I need a good 20min warmup. Would be great if I could specify that all my workouts get this. Secondly, I hate workouts where the watts are going up or down by 3w every couple of minutes. I would rather you give me one 10 minute block at X watts. Once again, would be great to be able to steer the preferences for your workouts.
I do! I thought it had died a few weeks back (turned out to be a dodgy new battery) and was really rather gutted as getting a 165 mm replacement arm is impossible now Stages are bust! Precision don’t do one to fit those cranks. I costed a full drivechain+crank replacement with SRAM XX but luckily for my wallet, another new battery worked ![]()
FYI, Giant’s acquisition & reboot of Stages is complete. They’re back up and running.
