Trainerroad Rowing in 2025

Does anyone know if the TR app can recognize and use power from a concept2 rower?

There are some threads on this, but they’re pretty old and I wanted to see if anything had changed.

If not, any plans from TR to add this? Probably a lighter lift than adding functionality for running swimming or lifting.

I used TR for years, but cancelled a while back as I wasn’t cycling. I’ve been getting into rowing and miss the reliability, UI, and calendar.

Hey @aaikins !

Did a bit of digging anf found this info:

Connecting to Concept 2

This will require two devices: one mobile device, as well as another device that can connect over Bluetooth.

Before starting, the PM5 computer on the Concept 2 Rower must be updated to the latest firmware version which is started on either app below.

We should also download the PainSled app to your device so that it can convert the rowing to watts.

  1. Once we have the PainSled app installed, navigate to “Log”, select Settings, and enable the 3rd party option for iOS.
For Android, go to the link tab.
  2. Connect the PainSled app to your PM5 by selecting “More Options”>”Turn Wireless On” for your PM5.
On Android, select “Concept 2 BLE (PM5)” and “Cycling, Power Meter Emulation”.
  3. Open TrainerRoad on your other device and navigate to the “Devices” tab.
  4. Pair to your Concept 2 Rower, which will be the name of the phone that has the PainSled app on it.

This should allow you to use your Concept 2 Rower with TrainerRoad. Let me know how it goes!

Interesting, I may check this out.

The PM5 actually outputs watts natively but I’m reading similar stuff that you may need a third-party app.

If anyone has done this and gotten to work reliably, I’d love to hear it.

Thank you very much for the official response and for the great product.

I use the painsled app on my Iphone to go between a Ski-Erg and my tablet running T.R. Works good.

Do you consider yourself a rowedie?

It’s not a direct path to doing workout in TR with a C2, but it’s very easy to push C2 Erg workouts to strava and then they upload into the TR calendar (with the watts/metrics included). TR doesn’t incorporate the watts/tss into anything that I’m aware of, but I’m not sure how relevant that would be anyway. At least for me, Erg watts are in no way equivalent to cycling watts, so I don’t think mixing them makes any sense. I guess if you just wanted to use the TR system for rowing only, it could be useful if it just looked at ERG watts as if they were bike watts.
