TrainerRoad & Kickr v5 & Swift Ride

Hi! So… I have a bike and a Kickr v5. And Trainerroad. Love it. But my bike is starting to make a lot of noise, and I also want to have my bike ready for outside riding when I want, and have something else for my indoor rides.

So… I’m thinking: I’ll get the Swift Ride (just the frame), and put a Swift Cog on my Kickr v5 and use that with Trainerroad. I don’t ride in Swift, I only ride (indoors) in Trainerroad. Can I do that? I read a lot about incompatibility of Kickr v5 with the Swift Ride, but that’s around virtual shifting, I think, and I don’t need that with TrainerRoad, right? Because I just do ERG training.

Can someone confirm this for me? If I would ever want to go to Swift (nah) and use virtual shifting, I can then go and get a Kickr Core (or whatever kickr is available then)… but for now, that’s not what I need (I think), so I’m fine with using my current Kickr v5.

I am almost 100% positive the Zwift Ride will work with other apps but in ERG mode only. Shifting gears only works in Zwift and therefore other ride modes offered by apps such as TrainerRoad will not work but ERG mode should be fine.

Kickr v5 is not compatible with Zwift cog. Kickr v6 is compatible however.

It is not compatible with the v5 if you want to use virtual shifting. It should work fine in erg mode, as this is effectively just like staying in a single gear on the cassette..

@CMisker have you looked into just getting an inexpensive bike and putting that on the trainer, instead of getting the Zwift ride?

I have my old road bike permanently on my trainer. You might look for an inexpensive used bike that you could dedicate to the trainer.

The Zwift Cog will mount to the Kickr V5 but you will not be able to use the Click function for gear changes and menu change.

It will make you Kickr a single speed, now if you just use it for workouts in Erg mode you’ll be ok.
