TR Workouts, ERG, and out of saddle pedaling…

Just got my Jetblack Victory in and naturally started up an interval workout.

Everything syncs up nice. No problems. ERG was spot on for intervals and the ramp up/down.

Just one thing. If I stood up out of the saddle it was “off” like if you tried to stand up in a super low gear with no tension. Jerky, shaky.

Thought it might need time to adjust the resistance, but it stays the same.

Next thought was it might be the trainer itself. But I opened up the app, started a workout, set the resistance….it behaves like I’d expect with a firm resistance while standing.

So, I think it’s something with the ERG not adjusting the resistance appropriate for standing?

Anyone else experience this?

Are you slowing your pedalling cadence before standing up?

Can’t think of anything else unless it’s a tech issue.

When transitioning from seated to standing in ERG, click down two cogs on the cassette to a harder gear. Then do the opposite when transitioning from standing to seated.

As already mentioned, shifting is what I consider the best approach. You can slow your cadence (letting RRG adjust) stand and then speed up when you sit but its slow and bot nearly as smooth as just shifting like we do outside.

I should have mentioned! I left the swift cog at n to check it out.

I’ll swap a cassette in there next ride.

Perhaps you mean you feel a clunk at the bottom of each pedal stroke? When pedaling standing while actually riding, the bike moves fore and aft a little under you as you pedal, and this elasticity absorbs the small amount of slack in the drivetrain that might be there at the bottom of a stroke. Fixed on a trainer, the bike can’t do that and you’ll feel/hear it. With some practice you can change your pedal stroke to eliminate it on the trainer. A trainer or platform that allows the bike to move fore/aft can also help, though the additional weight of the trainer (and platform) damps the effectiveness somewhat.

Nah. Definitely a lack of resistance. When your’e standing your gearing (or resistance) has to be high enough so you can step down with your weight and not just free fall.

Yep. With ERG mode maintaining a commanded power, the resistance won’t change unless you change cadence. If you want the resistance to go up, you need slow the cadence and the resistance will increase proportionately. You can slow it and wait the few seconds it will take for the trainer to respond and increase resistance, or you can shift to a higher (harder) gear. Either way, the resistance will still be what is needed to maintain the commanded power.

Damn - I’ve been using the drop off in power as a little rest on my hard efforts for years!
