Any tips on how to get the Windows TR app running on Linux using WINE?
The old PC in my garage runs Windows 11 purely for TR. I do however want to move it over to Linux before its Windows 11 installation finally bricks itself through a failed update etc.
I’ve actually got the Windows TR app running nicely on a Linux PC using WINE, BUT I can’t get it to recognise either my ANT+ USB or Bluetooth. I need one or the other to link to my Stages power meter, otherwise I can’t do a workout on it. I’ve tried various fixes with no success so far.
I have successfully run the Windows TR app on Linux in a Windows VM (bluetooth and USB working), but I’ve rejected that solution because it doesn’t really get me off Windows. It would be easier to carry on running a Windows PC.
I’m using Linux Mint 22.3 but would be open to running a different distro if it would work.
I can’t really offer any advice to help you get WINE running, but I can support ditching Windows. I’d say that for the money, my Mac mini has been absolutely golden.
I actually tried to replace it with a Win 11 PC for various reasons (playing games during training heh) but the flakey bluetooth and speed of the machine undid that decision really quickly.
M1 or M2 mini are super cheap now on the used market and run TR and Zwift perfectly.
Anyway, my .02 for whatever it’s worth. Good luck!
I’ve often thought about this too - I run Linux for my primary laptop, but for my older dedicated trainer laptop I have a Windows 10 install, which is out of support. I would need to use hacks to put Windows 11 on it Like you, I don’t even want to bother with Windows anymore.
I use a combo of Bluetooth and an ANT+ dongle, which for me solved interference that used to interrupt my workouts all the time when having Trainer + Assiomas (Powermatch) + HR + Headphones all on Bluetooth.
It’s the ANT+ dongle which has prevented me from trying WINE. I assumed it wouldn’t work, but it would be great if there is a way. I don’t really want to use a phone or tablet. I’m open to using a VM, but agree it kind of defeats the point.
Mac Mini is an interesting option, but then I need to buy a monitor too!
Bluetooth in WINE is being worked on, but I don’t know how far along that is. I check every now and then on my Pop!OS install using TrainingPeaks Virtual, to see if it picks up my heart rate strap yet, no luck so far.
Could be that development is not yet far along enough to work as I expect, could also be that I just have no clue how to configure it properly nor debug it.
