@luke22 Do you mind if I look into your career and share anything that might be helpful?
“who cares what the number is” I’m sorry, telling me not to care about my problem is not super helpful. You might not want to know what your FTP bands and limits are when you’re out cycling because TR works to some proprietary scale. That’s ok, I’m not here telling you should mind, but I do. I like to know what watts to ride at when I’m out cycling to not explode, etc, and to do that I think it is helpful that things align.
This is a valid feature request/feedback - but it’s not what started asking for…
I know @eddie has said in the past he is pushing for TR to release the predicted 20min and 60min power values which would potentially fill a gap here and do what you want regarding pacing…. but to be frank I think it might be the fear of reactions from athletes like yourself - who put too much value in these kinds of values - that is stopping TR from releasing this feature?
I did do a 4-5 min pre effort, my own assessment was ~265 was the answer. I agree with your point about TR FTP now being an indoor ride metric not really an FTP that can be used for outdoor riding zones etc. My disappointment comes from the fact that this was working so well pre-update for me and it all felt synced up.
It was also working incredibly poorly for an equivalent number of athletes too ![]()

You’ll have to help me understand what that means or implies? ![]()
My take on FTP, no matter how we want to get that number is that I’ve been cycling and training for like 7-8 years now. I’ve done 20 minute tests, ramp tests, the old sufferfest test that I can’t remember the name of, and used AI FTP detection on TR. Through all of those, I have never once ridden at my FTP number for an hour or even close to an hour. It has always been the number used for training and setting zones. And it has worked for that as I have steadily improved each year. The new system on TR had me very skeptical at first as well, but I have been getting great results thus far just following what it tells me to do. I was willing to give it a month or two to prove itself. At this point, I’m over caring about the FTP number because I don’t use that with my friends as a measuring stick. All that matters to me is how fast I go in races. If I need to pace something, I can look at my power curve and that will tell me what I can do for different durations.
I would just encourage everyone to at least give it a try, without changing or adjusting workouts and see if you get stronger or not. My test of whether the training is working is the watts I can push out at durations, not the “how much can you bench” number that FTP tends to be in the cycling sphere. Just my two cents.
Do you use same power meter for indoor and outdoor?
Can Eddie share what he learns?
AI FTP is FTP, its in the name for a reason
Update from Trainer Road overnight: “What you experienced appears to have been caused by a bug. Sorry about that :(“
They went on to explain that TR failed to properly process my recent workout data which triggered a premature and incorrect FTP detection before it was due which got me stuck in the error message loop. They’ve had to clean up my account and restore it for me.
First, I do always appreciate how quickly TR team look at and respond to support help. I think it is rare and outstanding that a large user base company gets to things so fast, and they accepted this was on their side “I’m sorry you ran into this, and I understand the frustration of spending time trying to make sense of something that was a system problem on our end. That’s not the experience we want you to have.”
This is now consecutive months where bugs in my account have affected my training plan and process, which has led me to work in another platform for reliability. I’ll see if TR stabilises and is able to provide helpful guidance into my results and planning over the month or two ahead and share back.
TrainerRoad were able to diagnose an account bug and error and have restored my account in the hope it works properly now.
Appreciate the sarcasm. TrainerRoad were able to diagnose an account bug and error and have restored my account in the hope it works properly now.
I’m thinking that’s a “no”.
Can @eddie share? It’s always interesting to hear the inside baseball.
Agreed. Given the nature of the thread.
