I can’t help think that doing a once a week or every other week “Time Trial” training is fantastic work. It’s an easy thing do on your own but I’ve wondered why TR doesn’t include that in their Road, Gravel Racing or more importantly Cyclocross training programs.
I hate doing them but TT work is without a doubt extremely beneficial for a well balance program.
I guess we could replace a threshold workout with a TT race now and then and have that same effect.
I think a TT is a more difficult thing than a Threshold no?

Depending on the workout level it sure can be haha
define “Time Trial” training …
is this a 1 hour Threshold efffort? a real TT competition/race
or a TT specific TR workout with for example 3x10 @100% (dunno what action workouts in a TT look like, but whatever there is in there..?
I do agree that some hard efforts can be really beneficial, but you have to make sure you plan enough recovery around them, and not make them too hard too often.

Because each workout is designed to target the specific energy system required for your training goals or targeted events.
By following the training principle of specificity, the training plan focuses on the areas most relevant to your event.
Here’s a great blog post explaining you TrainerRoad builds plans: How TrainerRoad Builds Adaptive Training Plans for You
If you do a real time trial, you’ll be in recovery hole really quickly.
If you want to adapt to the position, just take any workout outside and do it in TT position.
If you want to train for a TT race, slap on the TT training block.
The premise for my FTP post was because after a year of religiously using TrainerRoad, my race performance declined. My ability to climb, sprint and and ability to maintain a high sustained speed in a pack declined.
I had a great coach for 5 years and had good results but decided to take a break (Save money) and went with TrainerRoad
When my AI FTP Detection recommended a drop I started thinking that something is off.
I believe my rationale to question AI FTP was appropriate.
How does your PDC from when you were with a coach compare to when you were using TR?
What has changed training wise? Is volume the same or has it increased/decreased?
Have you noticed any difference in approach to doing FTP, VO2 max or sprint work?
Pre AI FTP the best results wise for me on TTs was when, due to an operation I manually dropped my FTP and didn’t raise it again after, and concentrated then on developing more Time in Zone. FWIW I was with a coach prior to my op and whilst I saw good results with him, I saw more with TR and a stable FTP.
