Threshold types

Hi all.

I’m on FTP Build where my threshold sessions are all over-under, looking at moving to Olympic Tri where they are all Intervals.

What would make me want over under or any other type over standard intervals?

How much does it matter?

I’d say that the more specific your event type is, the more training specificity matters.

It also helps to have more than one type of stimulus from time to time. :+1:

My very simplified view:

  • sub-threshold (<97%): improve TTE and muscular endurance at threshold
  • at FTP or O/U: trains lactate clearance capacity, directly raises FTP
  • supra-threshold (>102%): primary target is VO2max, secondary FTP

Note: your FTP fluctuates daily, adjust percentages above to ensure staying correct side of lactate threshold. I usually prefer sub-threshold at 96% and supra-threshold at 104%; during VO2max block long intervals 106-110% (5min+).
