Can LTHR be automagically calculated based on e.g. seasonal heart rate profile? I realized recently that the HR I’ve inputted it likely wrong because it’s about the same as the average I held for 90 minutes on a non-race ride last year, so I’m curious.
Second HR question: can one choose different HR zone models? Friel and Coggan’s zones look very different, for example, which says nothing of the three-zone VT1/VT2 model that Seiler uses for his research.
Unfortunately there isn’t anything in Intervals.icu to calc LTHR directly (that just went on the todo list!). However the activity HR page has a chart showing your HR duration curve for the activity, the last 42 days, this season etc… You can look for the highest HR you have done for 30 mins and use that (variation on Joe Friel advice).
You can edit the HR zone numbers but there need to be 7 zones to match the cycling zones. When Intervals.icu classifies training as polarised or base or whatever it approximates Seiler 3 zones by using Z1+Z2, Z3+Z4 and Z5+. So if you setup your HR zones carefully you can get 3 zones (sort of).

eFTP and the relationship with power spikes
What do you think about efforts that go into power spike territory and the effect they have on eFTP – or don’t, if they are smoothed? If you look at my ride on March 11th you’ll see that there was a punch climb that’s around 3m20 long that I gave a bit of a push. Granted, I’m a novice rider and am trying to get a little more fit, but the eFTP that’s calculated when that power is flattened looks very different than when I make a silly adjustment that bumps my power smoothing to at least 700% of my current FTP.
What should one read from there? Or is it a good idea, for example, to only calculate eFTP on a time longer than 180 seconds? Just musing and trying to understand how those power curves respond with the tools within intervals.icu.

If power spike detection kicks in then the power is smoothed to fix the spike and the spike doesn’t count for best efforts or eFTP or the power curve. You can add the “Raw Power” trace to the ride timeline chart to see the “unfixed” power. Your sprint power is very good so you probably need to set the spike detection quite high.
Note that the percentage is “how much above the power curve implied by your FTP” the effort is, not just a multiple of your FTP.
If your short term power is very good then choosing a longer min duration for eFTP is probably a good idea. 300s should be good. The do a max 5m effort on good legs and see what you get.

I’ll give it a 5+ minute run sometime soon and will be curious to see what the result is. I’ve also been meaning to try a 20-minute FTP test again soon too, now that I’m giving it some more time and intensity.
I already said it before but here we go again: absolutely great work David. I use intervals.icu on a daily basis.
Small suggestion, if I may: I use TrainerRoad combined with intervals.icu to plan my weekly ramp rate and outlook of my fitness curves. Would it be possible to have an automatic calender refresh too when pressing the refresh button on the top right on the fitness screen? (what does this refresh button actually do?) Now I always need to go to the activities screen, refresh the calendar, and then go back to the fitness screen to see the result.
Thanks! The refresh button on the fitness page actually scans the selected date range and looks for activities not synced from Strava. It is possible to “miss” activities if you jump around to different dates on the calendar view when you first start with Intervals.icu.
I can organise it that external calendars are synced automatically when you refresh or load Intervals.icu. Thats a good idea. Tx.
Click the “Charts” button under the ride timeline chart.

It now automatically refreshes all enabled external calendars when you first visit the calendar and fitness pages and on subsequent visits 4 or more hours later. I didn’t make it refresh whenever the refresh button for activities is clicked because if my ride hasn’t reached Strava yet I click the refresh button every few seconds (impatient sort!). And I wouldn’t want to hit TR that frequently.

Have you considered allowing “overlapping intervals”? For example, many VO2Max sessions have short intervals that build on a sustained sweet spot phase (thinking Whiteface).
If I make the VO2max sprints the intervals, I miss the overall sweet spot effort, while the other way around, the meaning of the sprints is hidden…
But you are not doing SS effort only “recovery” part is your SS so how this could work and why you need the data from bottom par SS effort as a whole? (If I am understanding this correctly). Just wondering.

I think I need to add an option or another event category to get some of those off the chart. Works better when you only have a few big notes (build, SSB1 or whatever).

How would you suggest I model that? Have intervals for the VO2Max intervals and forget about the “raised base” or the other way around? ![]()
I would have intervals for the “more impressive” VO2max stuff
The rest of it will show up in the intensity of the session, time in zones and so on.
Is that ego-boosting intervals visualization? ![]()
