Thoughts on cross training

Next summer my A race is a 50km trail running race. I’ll be following Hal Higdons base then 50km plan. I was thinking about replacing scheduled recover runs with cycling and xc skiing (when weather allows). Does anyone have any thoughts, experience with this? Are recovery runs the best to swap out or should I add the odd cross training interval session?
Cheers

Hey Kirbo, don’t have any advice on this but I’m in the same boat as you. Have a few 50km/100km trail running races coming up soon and also do not want to sacrifice my fitness on the bike or in the pool, so trying to fit everything together. I’m sure people would say focus on one thing but life is too short  So I’ve only signed up for trainerroad and started sweet spot (low volume) training plan. So that’s 3 rides a week, leaving space for 1-2 tempo runs during a week, 1 long and hilly run on the weekend, 1 gym session and 1 pool session. That is roughly 1 exercise per day (would easily commit to more, but my evenings are booked with studying till mid-October, will make some changes after).

Saying all that, I have no idea where I will end up, but hope for the best.

Cheers
