I used to grip the hoods this way The Truth About Numb Hands – CinchCoaching which was good, but Rock On is better for me. I am surprised how much better I feel on the bike with such a minor adjustment.

I’d be curious if that cinch method would be secure enough on rougher gravel rides.
I don’t use the rock on method either. I typically shift with middle finger and index finger typically rests on the side of the brake lever.
I used to use the Cinch method, but not much anymore. The Rock On position has been great for me. I used it quite a bit in the 105-mile Big Dam Bridge event recently, and it offered me stability and comfort. I was surprised.
How did it go?
It was ok. I realized I am never conscious about my finger placement and just do what is comfortable, switching between hoods, drops, and aero bars. I’m not fond of the specific “rock on” position, but often keep 1 finger on the breaks with 3 on the underside of the hoods. I have no real need to have the pinky on the rounded portion of the bars. I save my complex pinky movements for when I’m drinking wine or martini’s.
