The Ironman Training Thread 2024

Hi all,

So IM Vitoria was last weekend and unfortunately it was a bit of a disaster. Post-covid I had only done very light training for the final 3 weeks leading into the race so wasn’t sure what I’d be like on the day. The week before I actually considered not even starting the race, but then came around to giving it a crack. Took it easy on the swim and actually finished with a fairly decent time of 1hr 8mins. Got onto the bike and was hitting target power for the first few hours but my legs started to feel heavy from about 60kms and it only got worse. Gradually lost all power and just felt I had nothing in my legs so decided to throw in the towel at around 80kms. Unfortunately I had just started the second lap of the bike so had to soft pedal another 50kms to get back to T2. Then had the indignity of cycling through the city with everyone cheering me on thinking I was one of the leaders :sob:. So overall a bit of a crap day but that’s life. I think that is probably me done with full distance IM. Gonna focus on cycling and the odd shorter distance tri from now on.

Good luck at alpe d’huez!

I saw Skipper’s post Swansea 70.3 video - he was pretty cut up about his performance, and performance this year. Choking back tears at Lake Placid pre race athlete. He clearly thinks his career is over, so I’m watch IMLP live hoping he gets something.

I think I said a few races back that I think he needs a break, proper recovery. He always raced a lot for a long course athlete, and the pro series encourages lots of racing,…it’s just going to break some athletes.

I’m a bit surprised no TR athletes there today.

Edit
Not looking good for Joe :frowning:

What’s the current on consensus on ideal timing of a training camp for a full distance? 3-4 weeks out from race day?

So I picked up an ankle injury and I’ve been told to wear compression socks for a bit (including during training and racing) to help bring down the swelling. I was going to pick up some Compressport ones since it’s what I’ve seen at Ironman race expos, but they’re kind of pricy so I’m curious if any one has any other recommendations (ideally something that works well for cycling and running). Thanks!

I was just about to start my swim when you came out of the water.

Joe Skipper was a few seconds behind you, you looked better than he did out of the water. Looks like it took him some time to catch you on the bike.

Hmm, I’d want it earlier, but I’m not sure there is consensus.

A 70.3 latest would be 4 weeks to Ironman, but I always blew myself up at 70.3s.

IIRC old school/Mark Allen would say longest run 6 weeks before, although he was talking about really high volume athletes.

The main thing for me is injury risk, if it’s a training camp you know that won’t destroy you, maybe closer but I’m quite risk averse.

I’ve only used medical ones and when off training

In June I had a good race at Cotswolds 113 but training didnt go very well the rest of the month.

Least hours for a month since the off season.
Swim improved slightly, bike and run both dropped off but go a bit more run volume which help offset the loss of fitness during IM Swansea 70.3.

Did Swansea on a broken bike, but my fitness had dropped off anyway. Swim was 2 minutes better than I expected. The bike I lost about 16 minutes due to being stuck in the small ring (frame broken as I discovered 4 days from the event, front derailer mounts, six week lead time to fix so was a bit screwed.)
Run :man_running: was okay, lost 2 minutes with a toilet stop but ran up from 72nd to 43rd… should have been top 40 really.

Okay race overall as I’d been stuggling with allergies, stress and training all of June into the taper for Swansea. Live and learn.

No personal experience but everything Ive read suggests 5-6 weeks out.

I raced Alpe d’Huez too. In fact it was me who gave you a yell on the run. I think you were a lap ahead but in your words “f***ing dead”

Mediocre swim for me, really happy with the bike, but my knee blew out on the run and I really struggled on the downhill sections.

Finished 19th in AG in 7h27m. Haven’t been able to walk for the last 2 days although the swelling is going down!

Hard to believe but we’re halfway through the year already. Welcome to August, it’s roll call time:

@ashfordneil @ashman07 @Bbt67 @BenSwimsBikesRuns @Benwgoodfellow @Billabong @bretzky @DanF @Evert @Lee_Badrock

Roll call, continued:

@mrtopher1980 @Owenbrown @pstalley @snryan74 @teetopmlp @Wayne_Smith @windyyet

Hopefully I didn’t miss anybody!

I’ll start off: July was not great.

Lowlights:

  • I thought it’d be a fantastic idea to do a trail running race just for fun; I ended up with a sprained ankle that derailed my training plan with less than six weeks to go until Ironman Canada.
  • Fire and smoke season is in full swing now, so I’m back to training indoors with the air purifiers at full blast for the time being.
  • I’ve been really struggling with my mental health for the past month, sometimes just hopping on the trainer feels like huge victory.

Highlights:

  • The ankle sprain turned out to be not as bad as I originally feared. I was able to continue my bike workouts while it healed and I’m building some mileage on my runs now that my ortho gave me the all-clear to start running again. Not sure it’ll be enough to run the whole way in Penticton, but I’m prepared to run, walk or crawl the run leg if that’s what it takes to finish. (It’s my last shot at a full for a while so it’s do or die for me.)
  • Struggling to come up with a second bullet point. I’m hoping I get at least one day of good air quality so I can do a shakedown ride on the tri bike before the race, but otherwise my bike fitness feels pretty good I guess? Only missed one bike workout all month, a threshold workout immediately after the ankle sprain.

Lull and a touch of sickness in July, but feeling fresh and “on it” as we go into August.

After paperwork issues confounding my London Olympic, I’ve refocused on a half distance plan and reintroduced multiple runs a week. Bike power isn’t where I had hoped, but Im feeling pretty strong and building up regular lifting to a moderate weight. The sprint last weekend also helped with general morale and engagement.

In terms of racing, I plan to do a self-supported 70.3s on the weekend of the IMWC Nice and Kona, and I’m eyeing up a run/walk marathon for November on triathlon training.

Im healthy and injury free, which is a blessing and hope the same for others!

Never posted about my race so mini report on musselman.

Mentally this was a tough one since GF couldn’t race with the broken hand and since I barely trained I knew I could finish but basically didn’t care.

Swim I started further back than I planned but ended up being close to my actual time 35:23 on the swim. It was borderline wetsuit legal and I Didn’t bring a swim skin, can’t really swim in my race kit so was glad it was wetsuit. Pretty much just lazily moved my arms and dragged my legs, 0 Fs given, maybe my slowest swim ever? but that was on maybe 5 swims all year, so it is what it is.

T1 went quickly despite 0 effort to get through it efficiently.

Bike went better than expected I held back on the first half quite a bit to get through the climbs and then just negative split the crap out of the back half, where the downhills helped a little. Even with it going well at mile 40 for some reason I was like if I see a way to stop and get back I’m done. that didn’t last long. 2:36 I think that was 151 overall on the bike so really nothing to complain about given the lack of training.

Run, I felt good off the bike and went out hot, knew it but was like whatever going to crack eitherway just keep going, that didn’t last long. First lap of 2 I ran everything but aid stations and the major hills (2). Lap 2 I did a run walk split 2:15

Total time 5:35, obviously nothing to complain about with the lack of training and well also because its a decent time.

so anyway no more tris this year but I’ve actually trained more the last 3 weeks than I have any other week this year. I think only week I broke 10 hours was on vacation where i golfed for 4 of those 10 and the rest were hikes with the Tot on my back. AI FTP put me at 304 the day of the race which ties my record high for 2015, so working on trying to crush that.

Kind of have the itch to finally do a full next year since I’ll be 45, haven’t decided and can’t exactly justify the expense especially since my dad is thinking cozumel. GF gets first choice on 70.3 we do since she didn’t race this year, right now she wants Mont Tremblant, the opposite of flat fast bike course I usually like.

Only race left is a localish event where you race a train (not at the same time for safety ) up a hill ~15 miles. They don’t seem to post any results and only thing I found stalking FB/strava was someone doing like an hour flat at 200 watts and beating it so I’ll have no problem beating the train, and want to try and do like 300 watts for the whole distance as a goal.

Thanks for the roll call! I’m glad to hear your ankle is getting better!

Happy August everyong!

I was pretty good about getting my workouts in during July even with a family vacation during the month.

18 runs for a total of 88.36 miles (some shorter trail runs in there bringing the average distance down)
17 bike rides for a total of 274.11 miles (lots of MTB rides with shorter distances but plenty of effort this month)
14 swims totaling 20,250 yards (including a couple open water swims to test out a new wetsuit)

My son and I are doing XTERRA Portland this Sunday. It should be a lot of fun even if the forecast is showing low 90’s for that day.

Head down eyes up working towards IM Maryland. July was a good solid month of training, two complete days off. No fatigue, no injuries, or illness. Feeling very good and strong.
Swim 51,650
Bike 610
Run 112.5
Strength 3:50:00
69 hours of training

It has been a few months since I tested in all three activities, so last week I sucked it up and tested. Swim stayed the same, and bumped FTP by 5 watts, for the run test I did an easy run to the local track, and on a hot afternoon did a solo 5K that was 30 seconds faster than the New Year’s Day 5k I raced and was the second fastest 5k in the last 15 plus years.

My August plan is to continue with the volume and refining bike and run nutrition.

I’m working through a full distance triathlon training plan to get a start on building fitness for a race next year. I have to move some of the workouts to accommodate my life/schedule. Balancing the different types of workouts (swim, bike, run, strength) is hard enough, but add in Endurance, Tempo, Sweet Spot, VO2, drills, etc… and there’s a lot to consider. Like everyone, I’m hoping to get the most from my workouts and effort. Adaptive Training and other features have been helpful to help me focus on not burning myself out.

How can I identify which are the most crucial workouts for continuing to improve and focus my time there? Any advice for scheduling 7 workouts into 6 days (I take Saturdays off for rest and time with family)?
