I’m doing IM 70.3 Swansea in the 50-54 AG (well I’ve registered)
Excellent - all the best for upcoming season!
Yes - it will be really interesting - some might also use it as an “easy to get to” hit out!
Will be doing 70.3 Eagleman and Ironman Canada this year. Looking forward to the new thread and to reading all your stories in 2024.
Eagleman and Maryland
Back to racing this year, too much going on in 2023 (business expansion, 1 year old, moving) and of course training guilt with a baby meant I basically didn’t do anything at all last year. Signing up for Musselman now that the GF confirmed she’s in. Her last race was Maine 2018, and she said she was done but she was about to say she wanted to do a race again the same week my parents offered to gift us Musselman entries since my dad had just signed up.
Cheers. I’m back from a year of marathoning. Doing 70.3 Calgary and Waco this season. Happy training this winter.
Worth looking at the Cycling Timetrials (CTT) events. I did a few shorter 10 mile races and then did some brick runs after the race. They offer longer races too, so im looking at maybe 50-100mile events in prep for full distance.
I wouldn’t mind the looks,. To an outsider we’re looking stupid no matter the helmet, the insider recognizes the Aerohead as a functional and fast helmet.
To avoid dorkiness as much as possible I am saving my TT helmet for races only and ride whatever road helmet I have available. Incicentially, the vanquish was my do-it-all helmet before I got a fully fledged TT helmet. If you could have only one helmet I’d definetly go with something like the Vanquish, which is more versatile and less dorky. If you can afford having an additional race-only aero helmet, go for it. The aerohead has a reputation to work well for most riders, but I’d recommend testing different alternatives if you can.
I made my decision for my TT helmet, Oakley Aro7, based on looks, general experience of other riders and value (I got a sick deal on it). I did not test. Reviewing this season it seems very likely that, at least on my head, the Oakley is not faster than the Vanquish, probably even a bit slower.
Thanks!
Can I afford multiple helmet? Yes.
Do I want to have multiple helmets? No
I am not fast enough or race enough to justify having multiple helmets. I also don’t ride outside enough. I was doing 5 or 6 races a year (like I really wish I could) or riding once a week outside I would probably have 2 helmets. But right now that’s not happening and I want something I can replace the specialized helmet that is already over 10 years and that is also good for racing. I think the vanquish fits that requirement
Great blog, thinking about trying the 70.3 this year (first tri)
@thomas1 thanks for reading the blog. All I can say is don’t think, just do. Enter the race, set up your plan and go for it.
I went through a period investigating a single helmet for cycle, ski and climbing because I only wanted one. Long story short is no you can’t. But part of me still suspects…
