The Ironman Training Thread 2023

Thanks, Joe. April could have been better, I’m having some knee issues that have derailed my training these past couple of weeks. Still, managed to finish St. George, and as usual, I wrote up a little race report about it: Race Report: Ironman 70.3 St. George · Blog · Guillermo Esteves

That said, my knee is definitely paying the price for that, so I’m trying to see if I can get an appointment with an ortho to make sure it’s not something serious. Right now I feel like there’s a pretty decent chance I’ll have to defer Coeur d’Alene to next year or get a transfer to something else this year; thankfully I signed up early so I have the Flex90 benefit. We’ll see.

That’s a shame about your A race Joe. I think you said before it was the 113?

I’ll be there and was going to follow your race with interest

thanks, very helpful. I’m keen to perform well and as a naturally stronger cyclist run endurance is the key component IMO so I’ll go ahead with these. Having done a marathon a few weeks ago with friends I’m not finding the 2.5hr 30k runs too challenging, the concern is just around possible overuse injuries etc. I’ll stay mindful and stretch/strengthen and fingers crossed that will keep me injury free.

Cheers,
Henry

Nice write up and race. Sucks going into it not being 100 percent. This was the first time I missed St. George in the last 6 years besides the Covid year. Transferred out and into Santa Cruz after hurting my foot. Also had to transfer out of CdA and into California Ironman. Just finally able to run again.

I think the right ftp is the one that allows you to stay consistent and finish the workouts. 10-15W difference in FTP is irrelevant to consistency. If 289 is preventing you from doing the workouts even if it is the right ftp, it’s not useful.

You’re absolutely right.

Holy cow, that’s fast! Congrats on the PR!

@JoeX , how in the world do you break a chainring like that? Your training looks great but sorry to hear about the 70.3 cancellation.

@Billabong what components on the argon18? And what wheels on the Felt? From a speed standpoint they are the same. Are you able to ride them? The one that fits you better is the better choice.

@giventotri awesome race report. Sounds like you had a great race despite the swim. I too find full sleeve wetsuits to be constricting. I did IMAZ a couple years ago with no sleeves in 63 deg water and had no issues.

Aragon SRAM Force Etap
Felt Reynolds Reynolds AR58/62 DB

Can’t ride have to order either. Coachf/itter says I fit either bike

I would go with the argon but it’s a matter of taste. I do like etap and HED better

Thanks Joe.

Training is ok. Unfortunately Covid set me back a little. But I do feel fortunate that I was only sidelined for 2 weeks (vs 5-6 the first time I had it). But now I have this eye infection that forced me onto a z-pack. So maybe a not great week of training coming up. We’ll see.

8 weeks of HV Half Distance Base. Completed all feeling great.
8 weeks of HV Half Distance Build. 4 good weeks followed by 4 weeks kind of wrecked by covid.

Currently in week 2 of 6 of HV Half Distance Specialty leading up to Eagleman 70.3. I feel like I’m probably back to pre-covid fitness. So thats a positive. Just not as far along as I was projecting if I hadn’t gotten sick. But I guess thats the game we play!

Hope everyone else is coming along nicely in training!

Hey everyone, incase you didn’t listen to the last 2 minutes of the May 4th podcast, the Sprint and Olympic Tri plans have been updated. Half and Full distance are yet to be done.

From 1:23:30 onwards, refers to the RPE scale used on runs and the workout progressions.

I’m a little undecided as it seems they have taken a route on RPE to run pace I tried years ago and rejected.

I had a big month of 73hrs training in the lead up to Port Macquarie IM 7th May

Ride 44:00 (8 hours was commuting, so not structured)
Run 17:11
Swim 11:30
Strength 1:00

I finished the event in 12:00:20
Swim 1:06:07
T1 6:36
Ride 5:36:30 with 1634m of climbing (0.9% avg gradient) Best power numbers from 3:30 to 5:35: TSS 276: IF 0.71: NP 209: Avg Pwr 198
T2 3:24
Run 5:07:51 (Left hip flexor flared up around the 23km mark. It was a pre-existing injury from two weeks out. I walked the next 19km and finished with a trot across the line) My goal was 3:40, so not a complete blowout and I finished within the top 25% of my age group. :tada:

I can’t fault the TR MV IM plan and all the knowledge shared via the podcast. Five stars as always.

That’s a great result despite walking half the run. Well done!

I haven’t listened yet. What aspects of the plans have they changed? Bike zones that they target for progression/AT? Run or swim details?

That’s about my summary of those two minutes.

Bike race done ( vuelta al Teide). Bike legs had a kick start with 45 hours on the bike over 10 days….

This is the month I get back to the pool and start swimming and really clean up my diet. Also will be seeking help from friends that coach on approach for a full at end of July (outlaw) and then Nice early September.

Outlaw now likely to be a race on swim and bike then a run / walk strategy of some sort to save the legs from getting fully smashed.

Anyone using butterfly starts to the swim leg?

No, but Chase McQueen finished out a Super League race with fly.
