I’ve updated the race calendar at the start of the thread so we can all see who is at what raced coming up. In May, we still have competitors at Ironman Lanzarote, 70.3 Chattanooga and White Lake.
Still on track this month and ready for the first big race in 2 weeks.
Swim 12h 31k
Bike 26h mostly Turbo
Run 17h 211k
Conditionning here and there!!
Did a prep race in spain, swim was canceled due to strong wind and bike was shortened by 20k.
Anyway still, a not bad race for me: best 2h W with 240W. 1h26 run. Top10 and 1 vet due to lot of dns, dnf and lack of participants.
Fingers crossed I can deliver the same kind of performance.
April - getting my cycling oil back on track after a tumultuous march into April with colds, viruses, and allergies (and the struggle with finding the right meds… none). Didn’t get much running in. My HIM plan starts on the second week of June. Will start sprinkling more runs in starting this week with my cycling plan nearing completion and A race coming up on 6/3. I lowered my FTP from 289 to 275, but did a Zwift time trial yesterday and my average watts ended up at 301 for 20min, a new lifetime best. And that falls just under the 289 AIFTP I lowered from. So I just manually changed it back up lol. As far as swims go, I’ll be doing my first open water swim on Memorial day weekend during the air show I usually take my family to with a boat. Then I’ll be going to my in law’s pool a few days a week until I can get more OWS in at the beach when time allows.
Ended up circling the public health drain for a few months prior to finding out some pretty fun medical stuff (sarcasm intended) Eating and sleeping properly is a big challenge so training was at best recreational and at worst entirely absent, but steadily improving with proper treatment and I’ve managed to string together a couple of modest-but-solid blocks together.
Dipping my toes back in with a half marathon in a few weeks- going to be a ‘f*ck around and find out’ event more than anything, but based on my race pace workouts I’m reasonably confident about hitting a time goal that’s within reaching distance of where I was. Slowly bringing the bike load up in preparation for duathlon season, and hoping to hit the full distance in Taupo at the end of the year. It’s a bit of a reach, but the training Is a net positive either way so I figure I might as well go for it and worst case have a nice holiday booked. Initial goal is just to finish, but amenable to additions depending on how things go.
Thanks @JoeX for the roll call. My training is going well. I’ve just finished the low-volume, full distance base phase in preparation for IMWI. Due to some travel and illness, I ended up extending it to 14 weeks rather than the standard twelve. Along the way, I set a PR in a 10-mile race (1:04:12). I’m doing Des Moines 70.3 in just under five weeks and feeling pretty good. I plan to get a little more time in the saddle before Des Moines-- yesterday I just did my first outdoor ride since late October. Here are my weekly averages for the base phase:
April start out alright and then i quit half way through the month and then did a half marathon which didnt go as well as i wanted it to.
I dont know whats happening this year but my mind’s not into it. 5 weeks until my Oly this year
Cycling to work has resumed so some mileage is being added and i’ve re-started my weekend rides now happening on the Tri bike.
Build wasn’t particularly tough in my mind but Speciality has introduced threshold sessions at 105% which I have really struggled with (separate thread)
70.3 pace feels good, and HR is staying low over 90mins, I’m pushing higher watts at 210W, and a 90min run off that felt good to run fast an hour at target race pace 5:17/km at a reasonable HR in the sun.
Swim club has been good, much reduced FS volume but something is going right as my 33m repeats time dropped 30s to 27s (1:21/100 pace). A 1900m TT has me at 33mins which is fit but not yet the gains I want to see (30min).
So training is going well but…due to family issues I’m cancelling plans for my 70.3 A race that was for June 4th.
So I will probably simulate a 70.3 brick on the same date instead and focus on prepping for Ironman Frankfurt on July2nd….FulGaz finally released the Frankfurt course so I’ve been simulating rides on it already
Edit: Oh yeah, went out for an outdoor long ride and…
Swim 35000 yards
Bike 360 miles
Run 90 miles
Strength 4 hours
Started the month off with the Smithfield Sprint (300 Meter pool, 10-mile bike. 5k run) 3rd age group (60-64) 44 seconds separated top 3, 37th overall. I would have finished 2nd in three younger age groups.
A solid month of training. Three 3700+ Meter swims and some good long weekend rides maintaining race pace intervals of 20-25 minutes. Strong and steady long runs. The run focus has been on nutrition and negative splits. One very short open water swim to try out the new Roka MX wetsuit. Going longer this Wednesday.
Saturday I will be racing Kinetic Multisports Festival Olympic in Northern Virginia.
Looking at two bike options and looking for your recommendations
Aragon18 E-117, adding Hed Jet RC Pro 60/90
Felt IA Advance Ultegra DI2
The Felt is about $800 more.
April has been another solid month of training as I gear up for my first actual triathlons (a practice Oly distance event in NJ in May + 70.3 Western Mass on 6/10).
Did my first “race” half marathon (open) and it went really well despite crappy conditions (1 hr 37) and been super happy w/ run progress. Swim is slowly but surely coming along…but slowly. @JoeX those swim times are definitely something to aspire to! Excited to try my first event on May 21 (Jerseyman Olympic Tri if anyone else doing it)
Thanks, Joe. April could have been better, I’m having some knee issues that have derailed my training these past couple of weeks. Still, managed to finish St. George, and as usual, I wrote up a little race report about it: Race Report: Ironman 70.3 St. George · Blog · Guillermo Esteves
That said, my knee is definitely paying the price for that, so I’m trying to see if I can get an appointment with an ortho to make sure it’s not something serious. Right now I feel like there’s a pretty decent chance I’ll have to defer Coeur d’Alene to next year or get a transfer to something else this year; thankfully I signed up early so I have the Flex90 benefit. We’ll see.
