The Ironman Training 2021 Thread

How?!

You probably would know if it was the ack… You would be in a LOT of pain… (been there)
Hope is not

I think it was carrying boxes of new hardwood flooring up a flight of stairs. I didn’t do anything else out of the ordinary. It didn’t hurt while doing it but gradually throughout the rest of the day it kept getting worse.

Hope is nothing major!

I had broke my ACL long ago, and it was a huge pain in the but!
But it doesnt sound like your will be that bad… maybe a few days will be better?
It is swollen?

Not visibly swollen but I can feel it is stiff and I cannot bend it fully. It is in a lot of pain. It has felt like I needed to crack it or pop the joint back into place. This morning it finally did pop. It hurt a ton and then felt a tiny bit better. Hopefully my doctor has good news for me tomorrow.

I’m pretty sure I have a torn meniscus and MCL from last April when I was running and heard a loud “POP”. It feels unstable in lateral movements, and will “catch” sometimes where it fees my knee is out of place, and I have to twist and contort it until I hear it “pop” back. It’s been a pain and annoying. But it really bothers me mostly doing lateral work. Straight ahead swim/bike/run doesn’t bother as much, so I plan on getting it looked at after my last 2020 race.

Right after I hurt it, it swelled up a lot and I couldn’t even walk on my left leg. It went down after a few days of rest and ice. Seems like the more training and strength I get in my leg, the less it bothers me.

Thanks Joe will check it out

How are you guys finding out what you think your race weight should be ? I am around 73kg @ 183cm . Just under 6ft i think. Just trying to workout what my race weight should be around.

Mmm, can be a controversial subject.

I don’t look like an athlete, if you get my meaning, but Ive done five Ironman races and I know what I usually weigh on race day - I take that as my racing weight.

I tried looking at my weight against actual athletes of a similar height, but that became quite a negative mindset as my weight doesn’t go anywhere near that low at the peak of my training and I can’t try to lose weight in that phase because I just start failing workouts.

I don’t think I’ve got this right yet though, so shop around for different approaches and see what works for you.

It’s way too individual to give any advice as specific as hitting a particular weigh. It’ll depend on your frame and background, along with other factors.

I’m a few inches taller than you at 190cm, going off your target of 73kg you might expect me to come in under 80kg. In reality if I get to 85kg or less my power on the bike drops off a cliff. My run might improve, but it’s not worth it - I get run down and stuff too.

My background was swimming and ball-sports, so tend to be a bit larger. I put on muscle pretty quickly if I make any effort. If you’re coming from running or cycling you might well have a lighter frame.

Any one tried the new precision hydration gels ? looking to compare them for race day events . I typically use SIS/High 5 gels in training as they are cheaper. However, when i do nutrition training for race day and longer rides i typically use Beta Fuel and Maurten gels. What do you guys do ? I am tempted to try the precision hydration gels for race day on my next event and try train with them. Was wondering if anyone has tried them already ?

When you’re looking at Best Bike Split it has a weight adjustment field. So set up for how you are, see how your power gets you for a course. Then adjust the weight down a few kilos and you’ll be surprised how little an effect it has on your time.

As I’m running more and more consistently, and overall training more for the last 18 months than ever I kinda expected my fat to reduce but it hasn’t :man_shrugging:t2: My body’s desire to stay heavy outweighs my mind’s desire to look athletic. But I am getting faster, so who knows - maybe the spare tyre helps in ways I don’t understand yet

That is very true actually. I have bee playing around with the weight and it has maybe a minute or two difference so not really too fussed now about the weight. Especially when i will have all my nutrition and gear on the bike.

No bother.

If you’re looking to cut be conservative, you’ll figure out over time what your body can manage. I tend to just eat healthily and rely on volume to bring the weight down. I’ve had a few missteps this year with injury etc. so like @JoeX I’m running a bit heavy too . I’m not really rushed, I’ve no big races coming up. If I need cut a bit faster, I generally just supplement with a bit more protein to sate the appetite - I don’t cut anything out except snacks/treats.

For most of us, this is a hobby.
As long as I fit in my jeans, then I am good.

I am in the process on not fitting in them, so maybe not so good now.

I am 177 (5’10) 75 (167 ish) and my non athlete friends think I am too skinny, but my tri friends whom i check with regularly say I am not skinny. Backdoor brag time…it is hard to find shorts and pants that fit. I have been athletic my whole life and at 58 my waist is smaller than when I was in High School.

My training partner is a Psychology Professor and her thoughts are once you are in a good training block and feeling strong (which I do) weight is more of an ego thing than a necessary indicator of health and performance.

I really hope this is true…
Because the 5-8 pounds I have put the last 2 years are not looking great…
I keep telling my wife is all new muscles from the bike and swimming… but she isn’t buying it anymore!

A question for some of you. When racing a middle distance or just in general. How many SIS hydration tablets do you pre-load for sodium content in your water or to have on the bike in the race. Just curious if people have experimented with more than one tablet in a drink of water ?

In case any of you aren’t following the Collins Cup build up, there’s some trash talking from Kienle that those of you from Australia and the US might (not) want to hear
