The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

Nice one… did you sort out your numbness issue when in the aerobars?

Yep, purchased a ISM 3.0 saddle and the issue went completely! Much more comfortable low down now.

Excited for Outlaw, seems like some big names will be there as well

This is one of 4 routes I have left to complete.

i dont own a running power meter (yet).
I dont think the tech is where i would like it to be.
There are way to many variables that affect running more than cycling.

Cycling power is a real measure of something happening - The power produced by the cyclist at the measuring place (hub, spider, crank, pedals, etc)
Run power is a number thats calculated based on multiple things happening (HR, elevation, weather, wind). There are way to many sensors that need to be working great for this to be accurate. And we all know thats very difficult.

that said, the IDEA of running with power is something i like.
It aggregate many things into one number.

When it comes to running, HR will be king measurement until someone finds a way to measure power from the legs and not from all the environmental variables.

@Joelrivera I’ve been reading in the last few days about the subject, and I think the technology is a lot more mature than it was a few years ago. The power is calculated with accelerometers and gyroscopes, and in the last version the algorithms can now account for the wind.

The big advantage in comparison to heart rate, is that HR is affected by much more variables then power (stress, recovery status, heat/humidity, caffeine, etc). Also, hr has a delayed response, meaning that when you change effort/pace, you only see the result in hr after a while. Also, in longer runs/events, the cardiac drift makes it difficult to pace according to hr, while power is consistent in it’s readings.

The only thing that’s still not completely developed is that devices from different companies give different power numbers, even if highly correlated. But that just means you can’t compare absolute values between devices from different companies. But like in cycling, if you stick to that power meter, once you calculate your FTP (or critical power, like they call it), you can create zones and train and pace accordingly.

I just have to start doing critical power tests every few weeks like I already do ftp tests for cycling.

It was not that bad honestly and Uber is worse as you go up Alpe last.

I am going to do the Four Horseman today which is tough as Alpe and the jungle last. Jungle not bad as long as you switch to a mtn bike.

Interesting.

I though part of the calculation was the HR.

I may give it another look. Specially if they ever go on sale… its too expensive.

What’s your name on Zwift? I saw two Eric Boyd’s there.

Let me know how Four Horseman went (ET, NP, etc). I need to plan to tick that off too.

Not training related, but it looks like IM 70.3 Tallinn in Estonia is going ahead on Saturday–saw Sebastian Kienle flew there and checked in with his Covid testing after he went to Challenge Davos last weekend only to have the race called off a few km’s into the bike course due to weather. I think this will be the first IM event of 2020 since the pandemic was declared in March?

Eric Boyd - RCCAtl. Doing flattop right now via TR at 325 ftp with Zwift on the course. 49 min in of the 3hrs and 25km of the 90.

I am planing to get off as I coast down Alpe but will let you know when done. Guessing 225 np and 3:20

And the full distance also. They tried to tempt me in too :yum:

Full indoor? That seems insane

Oh cool, I didn’t realize they were running both at the same time–do they normally do that or is it combined due to Covid delays?

I dont know - was just browsing for alternates to Barcelona. They had an anti-isolation protocol if you had the right tests at the right times all negative.

Awesome. My FTP is currently 324 which means I’d take basically the same time. I also run Zwift concurrent with my TR sessions. Must just see what workouts I have going forward. I recall doing Flattop during TB3 HV.

@AJBotha So I just finished via flattop. NP 211, time pedaling 3:27, Zwift time since I coasted down Alpe was 3:50. During cool down I extended it a few time and put intensity up to 110-115 but everything else was 100%.

I am 168lbs and 6’ just to give you some reference. Used the Tron on flats, emonda and lw on the climbs and specialized epic on the dirt.

Enjoy and was fun but the last 15 minutes I was ready to be done.

Hi @jmdcovas!

I have been using Stryd for a few years and my running has improved steadily. I use the Palladino running plans and those seem to work for me very very well. These plans are not for triathlons but some very good guidelines (ie range of FTP per distance) do exist for triathletes using Stryd. Stryd itself has triathlon plans. I was suppose to follow one for my first full IM but it got postponed until next year. Message me if you want more info.

Out of curiosity are you doing smart trainer to TR and power meter to zwift? One device or two?

Indeed, Tallinn and a few others here in Europe are going ahead. I’m leaving for 70.3 Gdynia tonight and I think Luxembourg, Lahti and Sables are also go.

Route was changed, start waves will be separated into groups of 250, bib pick up only at designated timeslots and I had to declare already whether I’d accept a WC slot or not at sign up, assuming there won’t be a ceremony. Mixed feelings about their concept and no idea yet how they’ll handle on course nutrition, but I am so pumped to finally go racing again.

Interesting. My stryd should arrive tomorrow, so I’ll need to explore the app and training plans available.

I’ve heard of the palladino power project and already browsed the training plans he has on FinalSurge, but they seem too intense to do in the context of a tri plan. The big upside seem to be the structured approach based on power, and the included testing/time trials which allow for automatic ftp/cp calculations.

What kind of plan do you do, and if so, what kind of adaptations you make to fit it in a tri plan?
