I’m looking to add strength training for general health and to support my xc and gravel riding. I have limited space at home so I’m considering a wall-mounted cable machine for versatility. But I also want a compact, tidy way to do squats and deadlifts (ideally without a full rack). Anyone have experience with wall-mounted cable systems or other space-saving solutions for these lifts? Product recommendations, pros/cons, or setup pics would be awesome. Thanks!
My approach has simply been to do away with the need for a full rack by not doing squats! Have a hex bar, dumbell bars, a bench, a pull up bar and a bunch of weight plates. Hex bar deadlifts allow me to go heavy on the legs but without the need for a spotter or with the concerns about form and injury that come with squatting heavy. The rest of the equipment gives me plenty of options for things like Bulgarian split squats or weighted step ups, bent over rows, flies, etc. All tidies away pretty neatly and everything except the pull up bar is easily movable (and that’s high enough to not really be in the way anyway).
I probably don’t understand what you mean (pardon my reading comprehension deficit!)…but all you need for deadlifts is a bar & some gravity. My house came with the gravity already installed. After you’re done deadlifting, stack the weights up in the corner, turn the bar & stand the bar sleeve down through the holes in the weight plates. Pretty compact.
If you want to add a squat motion in addition to deadlifts, I’m gonna go old school and recommend you hit up Randy for his Super Squats hip belt. No rack needed. $200 may seem a little pricey for a hip belt, but to help convince you it’s a durable item, I walked out to the gym and snapped a photo of some of Randy’s lifting straps…which I purchased 23 years ago…and as you can tell, never washed.
No comprehension issues on your side! Just highlights that I don’t know what I’m talking about!
