Ride with GPS pulls in activities from Garmin and exports routes (courses on Garmin). These are and/or settings: it pulls all activities in though not just cycling.
The free version does basic (web-based) route planning, lower paid tier adds the mobile app; premium adds more planning features, heat maps and so on.
Garmin’s instructions are here:
Just used it to create a round trip route from four Fulgaz rides I’d done (so I can do it IRL one day) and it was pretty straightforward. I’m on premium so not sure if lower tiers would do that.
Not an ambassador or anything just a happy user.
I’ve never subscribed and never will. It’s not worth it. It gives me zero return on my investment. All I’d get out of it is comparing my segment times to my friends, which is an exercise in futility anyways. So, NOPE.
I have a subscription and probably will have one in the future, too. If they can figure out what is a reasonable price. I rarely use any of the subscription limited features. Heat map is nice. For all the rest I have better alternatives. But I like to see what my friends have been doing. I like to share some kudos with them. I also like to share my efforts with them and I don’t mind getting some kudos once in a while. Sharing some comments. Learning new routes. And Strava is an excellent platform for that. That’s what I’m paying for. They need money to run this thing.
I agree that they’re a business and need money to run it. But I won’t support a company that is running things poorly, and Strava has consistently shown that they run things quite poorly. I’m not going to give a donation to a company in hopes that someday they’ll get better. I can keep up with my friends’ activities and post my activities for free. I can give and receive kudos for free. I can comment for free. I was bummed when leaderboards went behind the paywall, but it just motivates me, even more, to get into the top ten. None of their paid content is worthwhile IMO. If they could figure out how to make it worthwhile, then I would subscribe.
TrainerRoad is the opposite. They provide such an outstanding ROI that some people are literally begging to pay them MORE money.
Their route planning with heatmaps is top notch. Other providers with heatmap also charge a subscription service too. The rest that Strava offers behind the paywell is fluff to me, but the route planning is worthwhile.
When thinking about which venture capitalists to make happy I don’t think about the features but the product (or service). Do I “need” it or not. Does it make my life more happy. Yes, I could get most of it for free from Strava, but I want them to carry on and I really don’t see paying for the service doing any harm there.
I was just checking VeloViewer. It seems most of the things I like about VeloViewer will still work with a free Strava account. I was going to stay on my grandfather Trainerroad price, but I a considering dropping Strava and using that to take up the 15% option
Of course there is no harm with sending a corporation $60. And if it makes you happy, then great. If you actually use the premium features, then doubly great.
I just don’t agree with sending venture capitalists money because “I want them to carry on”. They aren’t starving journalists or a non-profit organization. They are looking for a billion dollar exit / IPO / buyout. If they thought they could break apart Strava and make a billion, they would do it in a second.
Not sending these companies money, especially if you don’t use the premium features, might force them to innovate.
Totally. I understand that servers and staff ain’t free, but Im pretty sure they don’t need $80usd from each user for the ‘privilege’ of feeding their machine their data. Their ‘training features’ are next to useless so they’re not part of the value proposition for me, and there’s same-or-better routing options available. If they want to come back down to earth with a <$30 a year ad-free+leaderboards ‘strava lite’ access version I’m potentially open to that.
My first reaction to the announcement has been to reevaluate what I ACTUALLY get out of Strava compared to what I pay and whether its worth the extra money.
At the moment, as far as I can tell thats limited to the odd check for route inspiration on long ride days and power data to other platforms such as VeloViewer. On the former, I’d rate that a solid 2/10 for anything for >40 miles as its not reliable at all where I live (and when I travel for work for that matter). There have been many a route I’ve followed on my aero road bike with 25s only to find, miles down a paved road it turns to gravel or mud (or just disappears). The usual repsonse has been “ffs Strava, you’re sh**e!”, stamp cleats, ride up the massive hill I just decended and turn my z2 ride into a z3 ride because now I’m late for a wedding! (yes, this is a bitter memory I have!).
As a TT rider, seeing zone metrics in Veloviewer is kinda useful and interesting, though even the value of those to me personally is tenuous (because who keeps their Strava FTP up to date ). I’d rather see whether my z2 ride was actually a z2 ride in TrainingPeaks (free version) anyway to be honest.
Not interested in segments anymore, and my activities will still go to Strava so they will still have ‘happened.’
So the current plan. The plan is to cancel, see how it looks and whether I actually miss any features and data in other platforms then reassess.
EDIT (not sure the forum flags them?): this makes me respect @Nate_Pearson sincere video on pricing for legacy users even further.
They aren’t as good as RWGPS for mapping. They might be now but a few years ago I moved away from Strava and paid for RWGPS so I am not going to pay to find out if Strava fixed their map tool.
They never really delivered on workout plans.
Strava segments, obviously the ‘Thing’ they’re known for, are cool but there is so much cheating/accidental rides with vehicles or e-bikes now that they’re losing their meaning.
Their badges don’t mean anything or get you anything. Or they’re easily forgotten about.
They’re trying to be a social media site for endurance sports. But the time line is just spammed with rides and runs by your friends that you can’t see the forest through the trees. Simeone’s awesome mega ride gets brushed aside by your other buddy who uploads 3 zwift races a day.
For the prices they’re asking now for their service. They need to be doing something that makes me a better cyclist. TR for instance is an advanced training program that is constantly innovating, produces media and has an interesting forum. Strava has none of that.
I was a Strava premium member because I liked the ability to have live segments displayed on my head unit when I was on a Strava segment. But after I cancelled Strava premium I never looked back.
Definitely cancelling subscription. Too old and unfit for segments now ( the KOMs are notoriously being taken by folk in cars/motorbikes anyway, at least in my area). Routing and activity tracking in Garmin Connect is all I need. Good bye Strava.
I cancelled my subscription now that I’ve gotten better at creating smart segments in WKO5. Being able to see my results on segments was the only thing I used in the paid version.
The route creation functionality is still pretty poor and hasn’t advanced in years
I give Strava money to give them money because I like that they’re there. Now my choice looks be to give them $60/yr → $80/year for features I don’t really use. On top of that, they’ve started injecting “give a thumbs up to some random person who lives an hour away” into my notifications. I, like others, need to rethink this.
They’re raising prices 20%, causing a lot of customer rethinks. The price should be going down for more volume, not up. Maybe test a price tier for “thanks Strava” that comes with a bottle/T-shirt.
They need to start getting money out of the brand partners. 10% commission for all new GPS devices activated on Strava. 1% commission on Bike/PM if you want the make model to show in peoples profile. Put bike shops, services, tour guides, vrbos, and coffee stops on the map
Agree and thought the same. Nate and TR are providing options and notifications. Strava appears to just be increasing and for what. I have not seen much in the way of “new” features. For the most part it has been pay for the subscription to get the features we did get in the past. Some flashy stuff that is not really a benefit. 3D map wow! activities I will never use. Still reviewing but pretty sure in July Strava will see another small loss in revenue. Would love to see the numbers at the end of this year. Sure seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot.
