Facebook. Imo, their real value lies in being social media for runners and cyclists.
Agreedā¦but they havenāt been able to monetize it. They either need to allow advertising or find a way to attach purchases to it (either hardware or premium packages).
Oh dear, I would immediately delete my account if that happens.
I suspect theyāve missed an open goal with the social stuff and club/group supportā¦
In the real-life clubs Iām a member of or keep an eye on, all club discussions take place on Facebook: communicating about upcoming event, club rides, and associated banter. The only Strava involvement in this is an FB post to a Strava route. I donāt use FB generally and am only on it for the cycling (club) related stuff Iāve described.
IMO, that whole club/ride-group-based community and discussion stuff makes sense to be happening in Strava, to maintain ongoing engagement rather than the temporary engagement they currently see in a brief window following ride completion when thereās a brief flurry of Kudos being dished out and an occasional ride comment posted.
Iām not suggesting thatās the only thing they could do better, but IMO itās one of them; itās like they had a half arsed go at it with the club āpostsā function, which nobody uses, and then gave up rather than trying to innovate and find what would work, what would be useful and would engage people.
Yes, agree. The segments and leaderbords are nice add-ons, and most of the other features (training analysis, route planning etc) is done better by other companies, but the social aspect is what is not really avaliable elsewhere.
And, for the record, Iād hate them selling to facebook too, but it just seems to be where successful social media sites end up at.
Nah. Zuck couldnāt unclip and broke his arm. Looks like thats put him off a tad.
Agree on the club as some local ones here do everything on fb and I refuse to go there. Wish they would do it on Strava and make it private so members can get access.
But she got motor paced? So still a lame move? Not sure if it got auto - flagged or if someone did the flagging after seeing the description of the ride.
She said she got āmotorpacedā by the guy on the bicycle in front of her. So maybe Strava or a random user flagged it because they just saw that word
Definitely not the same as motor pacing then, so a poor choice of words on her part.
Iām sure drafting her way to QOMs still irks people though, heh (if thatās what ended up happening).
How on earth does a 19.1mph ride get flagged as a āvehicleā?
I can see some wonāt like it, but I have no problem with cyclists drafting en route to KOM/QOMs. After all, thatās why winning TdF riders have a strong team - so they can control the pace and keep their powder dry until it really matters (or until they can see the whites in the red coats eyes).
Wow itās even worse than I realized. If you do a ride then you see your segment times but even if one is your personal top 3, it doesnāt tell you which.
Congrats, Strava, youāve just removed the one hook that kept people coming back. I canāt see this being anything more than the beginning of the end for them.
Yes its the same as getting the KOM with a huge tailwind. Nothing wrong with that, everyone can watch the weather and get out there.
Hey! Iām back on the orange! WOOT!
I realized that if youāre fast enough you get a free pass onto the leaderboards.
Then I thought, well heck, I might as use my awesome speed and platform of privilege to promote goodness. So thatās what Iām doing!

You have the weirdest love / hate relationship to an app Iāve ever seen. Implying everyone should delete the app (like you) and noone should support / keeping the company afloat by paying for it - yet you post regularly about KOMs that you claim not to care about ![]()

Whatever rocks your boat - I guess. Kudos on your last KOM and your support of an good foundation. Good job!
Much stronger than my disdain for a crappy-but-free? app.
I donāt mind temporarily debasing myself if it permanently improves someoneās life.
Any tool in the shed to build empowerment!
Iām with you on this one. To me, Stravaās āplace in my lifeā is as my athletic social network, where I keep in touch with friends, clubs, groups, etc about how we work and play on bikes, runs, etc. I wish theyād do this really well. But they have so far blown the opportunity to do clubs, events, conversations, groups, and even comments well, so I see most people doing that on Facebook.
I also value Strava as my overall data hub: everything I do feeds into that, and then from there I move rides into TR or other services. I agree with @AJS914 that theyād be better off getting lots of people to pay $1/month or $10/year. I hope they manage to figure out something sustainable.
