Strava API Agreement Update

No, i think Garmin only push its own data, not data from 3rd parties.

Also, over time, Garmin have actually made it pretty hard for new 3rd parties to push activities onto Garmin Connect.

It doesnt look they want Connect to be a “hub” in the way Starva and TP is, rather just a (very useful) tool for owners of Garmin devices.

True, I’m already considering going back to Garmin, new head unit for outside, syncing to TR. Strava subscription cancelled and more or less paying for new head unit.

everyone is cancelling strava premium, but that wont bite till the next subscription year
surely the way to hurt them now is to demand a pro-rata refund today. I bet if they had a huge cash call, that would make their VC backers think twice over this path…

And surely if everyone bandied together you would have a strong case - you paid for a years subscription based on x, and they unilaterally changed the terms of service mid cycle

Just read this on the Strava forum, catching and to the point:

"In true Strava fashion, they continue to treat their customers and community poorly. These changes are really anti-consumer and they are behaving like an elephant in a porcelain shop.

In their key note they said they want to be leading the peloton and create a slipstream - currently they are the one rider in a 3 man break away who isnt cooperating with the group and the only slipstream they are creating is a spiral downwards that slows everyone down.

Extremely poor form Strava, extremely!"

Being VERY generous to Strava, it could be that they just dont want to be a data hub anymore. Maybe they are taking on a lot of privicy risk but dont see enough reward?

We might find more and more companies supporting uploads and downloads from cloud data services allowing users more control over their own data.

What else do they offer? Seeing/commenting on other people’s rides is about all I use it for.

I meant a data hub that other services can pull from - they might just want people to do as you say - use the data in Strava to do Strava things like seeing and commenting.

It’s your data and you have rights as to how it is used, but Strava is not obliged to facilitate storing and transferring your data to other companies for you.

I still think its a silly buisness choice.

And the short notice that Strava has given 3rd parties is unforgivable.

Just had a random thought. There are millions and millions of Strava users out there, the vast majority have probably never even heard of TR or Intervals etc. What proportion of them are data nerds like we are? Perhaps their analysis shows that we are a very small proportion of their users and perhaps take a disproportionate share of their resources. Maybe they are not bothered about us. I recall years back they stopped recording power and maybe heart rate data on activities recorded on their app as the it was causing a disproportionate amount of support calls and they didnt feel it was worth it.

Their reward is that they have all our data! They’re just not innovative enough to make good use of it without cutting out potential competitors. This is a very bad move.

I think they are being misguided but it’s their decision. I think the Itsmydata crowd as missing the point. Strava are saying you can give us your data, and its your data, but you cant demand we distribute for you
Similarly they are saying we arent going to do the distribution for rival apps anymore, they need to do that themselves.

Ultimately the apps left themselves in this position - I remember years ago when TR made a big marketing push on being able to push TR sessions to wahoo head units
Seems crazy that they didnt first/at same time spend dev resources ensuring the data from the wahoo unit was synced back to TR and not expect Strava to do that for them (in perpetuity)

On another forum I am on its Veloviewer integration they are worried about and there is probably other apps I’ve not heard of affected too; I think Strava could be surprised at the backlash.

I think they know exactly what they are doing and it will come as no surprise to them that others disapprove of this move. I expect @BarryG is probably close to the point of them not being willing to distribute data any more.

A lot of 3rd parties already offer connection to other platforms, like Garmin, but using Strava means everything is in one place and has made it easier for 3rd parties to develop from there rather than worrying about connecting to multiple APIs. The move from Strava puts the onus on to Garmin, Wahoo, Polar to get their APIs in order for integration to 3rd party products and services.

the shame is the small platforms that have been a side project for people trying to meet a need. they are unlikely to be able to spend the time, money and effort to develop a replacement.

I use a Wahoo on the bike, Garmin for running etc.

My future purchasing decisions will be very heavily weighted towards those who embrace open data standards and data sharing, and away from purveyors of walled gardens and data silos.

Garmin already has the thumbs down from me for its walled garden attitude towards non-Garmin recorded data being unaccounted for by it’s training readiness features, rendering part of my FR265’s value proposition useless…

If these manufacturers start taking the p!ss, I’ll ensure my money always ends up with the best, or least-worst, option. It’s MY data, and I’ve ZERO time for this siloing and coercion bullsh!t.

Another Polar user here and TR gets outdoor workouts via Strava. Would be good to synch these direct from Polar Flow to TR if Strava are going to be a pain.

I have been on Strava since 2013, but have never paid for premium. There is just no value there for me. In 2024, all I use it for is data distribution and I scroll a couple times a week to see what friends are up to. Thinking of deleting my Strava account all together. Why give them my data with nothing in return? I think is more and more people actually leave the platform, that will send a message.

I just read Strava has 125M members. Bloody hell
I bet 99% of them havent heard of an API before…

Sounds like Strava killing the golden goose.

I subscribe to Strava not because I particularly use many of the subscriber features but because I want the app to survive & flourish.

I did this when Strava started listening to users, condensed their ridiculous subscribers model, and got a new CEO on board supportive of the platform and it’s place.

Now they’re back to their old ways. What I’m reading most from this is that they want the AI space for themselves. How dare apps use “our” data to do innovative things with it.

If it was really about privacy, as DC Rainmaker has said they could update their T&C and add profile options to allow external use of their data.

I’m hoping that Strava listen, though from their support attitude of not allowing pushback I doubt it.

As ever with tech there will always be a new kid on the block and other ways to skin a cat.

Necessity is the mother of invention, n’all.

I’ll be letting my Strava subscription lapse in a few months if this is their attitude.

hmmm… i do have sympathy for Garmin here. Connect is primarily a tool for users of Garmin devices and is funded by the sale of those devices… I can see why they would be reluctant to make it available for rival manufacturers.

They made the welcome decision to accept virtual rides from TR and Zwift - and these do get processed for readiness - but I wouldn’t expect them to accept data from wahoo/polar etc.

You do always have the opportunity to dual record your rides using your watch if you wanted to make full use of Connects functions…

I agree with this. Connect isn’t Garmin’s product, hardware is. Strava has no product without the data from other platforms.
