Specific Race Training Plans

New to TR, setup my training plan and entered two race events to train for. The software doesn’t ask for race details, only target time. How does it know distance, elevation etc. to train for?

Hey there, and welcome to the forum!

We really don’t need all of the tiny details to get you a really solid, custom training plan.

We mostly need to know the discipline of the event, its priority in your race calendar, and when it is.

How long it is, your expected effort, elevation, etc., aren’t as important since we’re going to train you virtually the same way regardless.

We ask for time instead of distance and elevation because we feel that matters more, since your effort is mostly dictated by how long it is. Figures like IF are calculated based on power and time, not distance and elevation.

Climbing in an event shouldn’t change too much if you have the right gearing and can stay in the power zone of your choosing, but if you’ve got climbs that are steep/long enough to force you above threshold, that’s worth noting when selecting your event’s discipline.

The other major input that determines your training is your available time. We can’t exceed that, so we build the best training plan that we can based on the event, your recent training history, and the amount of time between now and race day.

Let me know if this helps and if you have any other questions! :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the response Eddie! You did mention “if you’ve got climbs that are steep/long enough to force you above threshold, that’s worth noting when selecting your event’s discipline.” For future reference where is that information noted when selecting the discipline?

There isn’t a place to tell us something as specific as that, but if you know that’s going to be the case and it’s the crux of your event, picking a discipline that aligns with that type of effort might be a good option.

I always recommend getting the right gearing for your event first, but if you are, say, doing a Gran Fondo, and there are going to be multiple steep climbs above threshold with surges, that might be a scenario where selecting Climbing Road Race instead of Gran Fondo is a good option.

A follow up question on events: When I provide an intensity estimate for the event, should anything that is a race be listed as a 9 (race pace), even if it’s a longer event ? (Like a 3 hour gravel race). Or should I selected an intensity that reflects my average power for the event? Essentially it’s an all- out effort, but it’s long enough that I’m not going ride above threshold for much of the race

Just enter how you expect the event to feel overall.

It’s not about power, but more about RPE. Any average power can feel like race pace if the event is long enough.

We mostly use this data to estimate the TSS of the event, so don’t overthink it.
