Solution to Drink Mix Powder in baggies on longer rides?

Hey, currenlty I use ziploc bags to put single bottle amounts of drink mix powder for longer rides, where I know I can get water refills along the way and just add the powder as I go.

I’m looking for a better solution to this. Guessing someone on here has come up with something? Something that is easy enough to fill at home and isn’t super fiddly when out on the ride.

Thanks,

Flask with a super strong solution (gel strength+) that I then pour into the bottles. Less messy than the powder, its already disolved, but once you add water you must use quick.

I use the tubes from tablet electrolytes. I have Precision Hydration tubes from before I started making my own. There is a desiccant in the cap, and it fits plenty tight so I don’t worry about it coming off in my pocket, or sweat infiltration.

I expect any of the tablet tubes will be as effective.

For my mix, one tube holds enough for about 5-6 bottles.

How big are those tubes? I have PH electrolyte tubes and it might be a stretch to get 90g of carb powder into one (enough for a single bottle)

This may not provide the answer to your question, but I find the Ziploc ‘portion control’ bags are shaped perfectly for pouring powders in and out of. They are a tall cylinder and almost identical in shape to a Maurten 320 pouch or skratch super fuel pouch.

Added to above reply for clarity

Make one “fuel bottle” with all the nutrition for the ride. If you’re riding 4 hours that bottle would for example have 400g of carbs (best with 1L bottles). Then make all other bottles plain water. Then you just sip your fuel bottle every 15-30 mins and chase with plain water. I put marks on my fuel bottle that shows ever quarter (250ml). Also, you could use the Nero Show sugar flask. Same concept but more concentrated.

Ziploc bags are a great solution though! I use Ziplocs too.

I’ve wanted to experiment a bit with storing drink mix powder in these… haven’t yet though:

The PH tube I have say the tablets are 60g, so not likely to hold more than that in powder. I use flasks for carbs, so “drink mix” translated to electrolytes for me.

Ah, sorry for the confusion. I’m looking for carb powder solution. Thanks for clearing that up.

I have something like this at home already, maybe I’ll try them. I was thinking a soft container of some kind with a fairly wide mouth to make it easy to dump powder into at home when prepping for the ride.

This is what I might try, but I’m not crazy about having something hard in my back pockets like this. One or two might be fine though.

Yes, this is very close to what I’ve been imagining someone might have. One of the things about my ziploc bags are if you get any powder into the closing seams, they dont’ work well and I’ve had bags leak powder.

Basically I think a heavier duty version of what you’ve shared, with a slider to seal would be pretty ideal. Heavy duty so that it can be reused indefinitely. What you’ve shared are a better shape and size than the standard sandwich sized ones I’ve been using.

I like using little snap top or screw lid vials. I find it much less fiddly than plastic bags. There are tons available in different sizes on Amazon. For a few, you might ask at a pharmacy and they might just give them to you.

Skratch sells their high carb mix in 50g packets.

Obviously not as cheap as the single bag, but…

I’ve used the Tailwind single serve packages, each one has 50g. I’ll sometimes use the unflavored packages, and and mix it with Gatorade in a bottle, gives about 75g in a 750ml bottle.

Stasher pouches. 3 scoops in the small size. washable, reusable and resealable with gloves on.

Yes! This is the kind of thing I’m looking for. Thank you

They also sell their regular mix in single serving format. I love the strawberry lemonade.

I’ve tried this a bunch, but personally I hate refilling dry powder, wet bottles. Basically the volume of powder is a pain, and it gets expensive for the single servings, dealing with clumps… I like liquid fuel, I just almost never do this anymore and only use it from the start, or at aid stations when it’s pre-mixed for me.

You can carry enough concentrated sugar drink, or maple syrup in a bottle to go over 6 hours of riding, especially if you supplement with gels. Refill with water or stop and pick up gatorade / coke if you’re going by a store or gas station. Much easier IMO and if you’re finding a stop to get water, you can usually get a little fuel on the way too.

I do need to carry an USWE 2L pack plus bottles in the warmer months. Hydrapak 250ml gel flasks can fit 160g worth of gels too. I can fit 3 of those in one pocket and that’s 4-5 hours fueling pretty hard.

Some interesting replies here thanks.

I have previously just filled up several plastic sandwich bags and relied on being able to shake and mix whilst stopped. Sometimes in a back pocket and also in a small rucksack which was rather heavy with approx 10 bags!

I’ve wondered if someone would ever get suspicious of a person with lots of bags of white powder at a petrol station …

I’ve never tried the gel bottle idea. Sounds like I need to experiment with the amount of water to get something that dissolves in my measuring jug in the kitchen but still liquid enough to get squeezed out of the bottle.
